First time I have seen people dislike forests. What is going on? I understand that a plantation, in the beginning, is a green wall, but it changes over time.

What do you have to bear in mind when considering supporting a #forestation project?

1. Don't support mono-cultures
This is very important. #MonoCultures are not helpful in regenerating the soil, attracting water, increasing biodiversity and they are not as effective ecosystems at sucking #CO2 out of the air as mixed forests.

2. Support long-term projects
If a project plants trees and then cuts them down after they have grown to full size that is not helping anything. Make sure the project commits to protecting and fostering the forest for a long time.

3. Make sure indigenous people are included.
Conservation areas protect nature from any human influence, which includes indigenous people. But practice has shown, that forestation projects are more efficient if indigenous people are included, their knowledge is used and they can use and care for the land. Also it's only just to support indigenous people. #NatureNeedsJustice.

4. Support respected projects.
Make sure the project you want to support is not all talk, but can also provide proof that they actually do what they say.
Check what certificates they have, if they won any sustainability awards and what newspaper articles write about them.

Ecosia is a search engine that donates most of it's income to #reforestation projects all over the world.
It is not only #CO2 neutral, but actually climate positive. They run on 200% renewable energy and every search request removes 1kg of CO2 from the atmosphere.

According to the website as of today they planted 120,2 million trees.
But they aim much higher.

Ecosia supports the #GreatGreenWall and aims to plant 1 billion trees across the #Sahel region.
They have already restored 35,000 hectares in Burkina Faso, Senegal, Mali and Ethiopia.

#ProForestation = growing an existing forest to it's fullest ecological potential.

#ReForestation = regrowing a forest where one was before. This is often done to stop #deforestation and #desertification.

#afforestation = growing a forest where none was before, e.g. to regenerate the soil or attract rain.
