  1. 66 billion #trees have been planted in #China's #GreatGreenWall to slow spread of Gobi and Taklamakan deserts — and they appear to be growing faster than natural #forests
A study of China's planted and natural forests reveals age, species mix, and CO2 sensitivity all contribute to how fast trees sprout leaves.
Researchers used satellites to track leaf area index, measure of canopy density and key driver of carbon uptake, to determine how fast different forest types grew.

  2. #GreatGreenWall 2.0: #China is #geoengineering #deserts with blue-green #algae
These specially selected strains of #cyanobacteria can survive extreme heat and drought for long periods, according to China Science Daily on Thursday. When rain finally comes, they spring to life, spreading rapidly and forming a tough, biomass-rich crust over the sand. This living layer stabilises the dunes and creates the perfect foundation for future plant growth.

  3. "Deserts are hard to reclaim because plants cannot survive on shifting sand, but scientists in northwest China are changing that – by dropping vast amounts of blue-green algae onto the dry terrain.

This is the first time in human history that microbes are being used on a massive scale to reshape natural landscapes. As the “Great Green Wall” – China’s massive multi-decade initiative to plant trees and fight desertification – expands to include efforts in Africa and Mongolia, the unprecedented geoengineering technology could one day transform the face of our planet.

This artificial “crusting” technique was developed by scientists at a research station in Ningxia Hui autonomous region, located in northwest China on the edge of the Tengger Desert, according to China Science Daily."

  5. Ever heard of the Great Green Wall? 🌳 It’s a bold initiative aimed to combat desertification by creating a mosaic of green in Africa.

Can this massive effort turn the tide against the Sahara? #GreatGreenWall #ClimateAction

  6. WHAT! #greatgreenwall #sustainability #endhunger #africa

"Permaculture instructor Andrew Millison journeys with the UN World Food Programme to the country of Niger in the African Sahel to see an innovative land recovery project within the Great Green Wall of Africa that is harvesting rainwater, increasing food security, and rehabilitating the ecosystem."

  9. @toodoolidoo That sounds really interesting.
I'm not an expert at all, but here are my thoughts.

    1. Afaik there is no really good carbon capture technology availible yet. Or rather none better than forests and peatlands.
So my theory: Rather than crowdinvest in some technology, that might not be fully matured yet, it could be better to crowd invest in a large piece of degraded land, reforest it, regularly to rejuvenate the forest so it can capture more carbon and invest in a pyrolysis oven (a technology that has been around for centuries - see terra preta) to turn wood into coal.

    2. I have no idea how enegy consuming it is to produce graphite batteries, but if you say they are superior to lithium batteries, then that sounds like a good idea.

    3. If my theory about reforestation/pyrolysis being more feasible than other carbon capture technology, then that we could do that whole project in the sahara (also perfect place for combining that project with a solar park), give away the desalinated water for free to local communities and sell it for profit to the local industry. With that profit we could by more desert, grow the forest larger and build an irrigation plant that waters the forest with our desalinated water and keep the forest safe and healthy.

If that all turns out to work we could work together with the #GreatGreenWall and apply for UN funding to make it bigger.

Like I said, I am no expert at all and have no idea, if that could all work (nor any money to invest), but this is basically a childhood dream of mine. I just always thought that I'm way too naive and if that worked, then clever minds would have long ago thought of it and made it happen.
Now I know, that I was mostly naive for thinking, that just because it worked and would save the world, that clever minds would make it happen - when there is so much more profit to be made with more exploitation and destruction...
