"The DJI Romo robovac had security so poor, this man remotely accessed thousands of them"
https://www.theverge.com/tech/879088/dji-romo-hack-vulnerability-remote-control-camera-access-mqtt
"But when his homegrown remote control app started talking to DJI’s servers, it wasn’t just one vacuum cleaner that replied. Roughly 7,000 of them, all around the world, began treating Azdoufal like their boss.
He could remotely control them, and look and listen through their live camera feeds, he tells me, saying he tested that out with a friend. He could watch them map out each room of a house, generating a complete 2D floor plan. He could use any robot’s IP address to find its rough location."
In case you're working on IoT devices, maybe you should consider including security practitioners into your development process 🙃

My super hacky NAD remote control over WiFi setup. An ESP-01S with Tasmota that gets its power from an ESP32-A1S board in the back. The black cable goes to the IR IN input of my NAD C 320BEE amp.
Bummer I can't do this with the squeezelite-esp32 firmware but I understand an IR send feature probably won't work: https://github.com/sle118/squeezelite-esp32/issues/229

Hooked up the "IR IN" input of my NAD C 320BEE to an ESP-01 flashed with Tasmota (tasmota-ir image). Assigned the "IRsend" parameter to one of the GPIOs, connected that GPIO to the tip of a 3.5" jack plug and GND to the sleeve. If I now send "IRSend" commands from Tasmota on the ESP-01 board the NAD responds immediately. In other words, I can now control this 20 year old stereo amplifier through WiFi. How NAD, eeeh, rad is that.

Our small domotics setup has been updated to the latest version of Home Assistant. I'm still using Home Assistant Core so I'm on my own, that way of running Home Assistant is not supported anymore.
So made a backup, installed Python 3.13, recreated the Home Assistant virtual environment, installed Home Assistant, copied over the Home Assistant configuration directory and started Home Assistant.
Few minutes later everything was up to date again.

High-severity security vulnerability found in [insert smart home device].
Could you imagine explaining to a person in 1980 that in 40 years, we'd all have to worry about someone monitoring us through our lamp or spying through our fridge. The smart home is a STUPID idea, always has been, always will be. I've experienced the smart home. We have smart home devices. The smartest home device is a simple light switch.

Researchers find Amazon uses Alexa voice data to target you with ads.
The report concludes that #Amazon and third parties (including advertising and #tracking services) collect data from your interactions with #Alexa through #Echo smart speakers and share it with as many as 41 #advertising partners.

At least you can say you are not alone at home anymore.
41 fu**ing partners.

New Consumer Reports research shows that #Ring #doorbell #cameras and similar devices can capture your audio at conversational tones taking place 20-30 feet away. It «really changes the paradigm of privacy».
