  1. Consent or pay puts power in the hands of Big Tech.

The UK's data regulator could force Meta to give us another choice, where we can access their services without being tracked.

In the meantime, you can take steps to #StopStalkerAds on Meta.

  2. Under UK data protection law, consent must be freely given.

Making your right to opt out of surveillance advertising a subscription service fails that test.

Meta can still make billions from advertising without processing our personal data, such as by contextual advertising.

  3. To consent or pay... that is the price tag on our privacy.

We have the right to opt-out of being tracked and profiled. But Meta says you have to cough up to #StopStalkerAds.

There should be an option that doesn't process personal data to use their services.

  4. Last year, Meta settled a case that showed we have the right to opt out of profiling for targeted advertising under UK data protection law.

The UK Information Commissioner's Office rubber stamped the consent or pay model, even though there's no option to receive ads that doesn't involve harvesting our personal data.

  5. I thought 'consent or pay' was effectively unlawful in the EU? I keep seeing it cropping up on websites.

  6. Meta using 'consent or pay' to deal with the right to opt-out of targeting advetising isn't lawful.

We shouldn't face a paywall to exercise our rights or accept our data being packaged up for advertisers to target us online.

  7. Meta must change their surveillance advertising model.

Until they do so, you can use your legal right to object to targeted adverts based on your personal data.

  8. Meta must provide a tracking-free version of their services that's accessible without having to pay.

Our report outlines alternatives to 'consent or pay' that aren't reliant on harvesting users' personal data.

This includes contextual advertising or subscriptions for advertisers.

  9. In 2024, 98% of Meta’s $165bn of revenue came from advertising with nearly $70bn profit.

Profit has come at the expense of our privacy and the right to opt-out threatens Meta's intrusive advertising model.

So Meta is expected to expand 'consent or pay' to keep lining their pockets. You either pay for its services or let #Meta use your data for advertising.

  10. Meta recently settled a case, agreeing not to use personal data for profiling in order to flog ads.

Since then thousands have used tools by ORG and other groups to exercise their right to opt-out.

But Meta is playing for time to figure out how to sustain surveillance advertising.

  11. Pay per privacy? 💸

ORG's new report warns that Meta mustn't use 'consent or pay' to bypass data protection law.

It's not lawful to force users into paying so that their personal data doesn't get used for targeted advertising, aka stalker ads. Users must have the right to opt-out!

  17. I doubt that the "Consent or Pay" option that some cookie popups offer is compatible with the GDPR, but I don't know if it illegal and I have no way to tell if it is or not.
I guess I pass on these websites if I encounter one, no thank you I certainly will not consent to the tracking and there's no way I will pay for being tracked just to be able to access those websites. 😛

  18. Third-party cookies are the basis for monitoring, following, profiling and targeting billions of people who use Chrome across hundreds of thousands of websites and data companies.

Firefox/Safari got rid of third-party cookies years ago, Google/Chrome won't.

'Choice' does nothing in digital environments, companies can design it how they see fit. We've seen too many dialogs that trick everyone into data exploitation.

Global 'opt-in'? I bet sites will be able to request exceptions #consentorpay
