>> The next time you wonder why more people don't use #Linux, remind yourself that…
There is an exact parallel for social networks where some #Fedi users suffering from #competitionAnxiety have created a facile dichotomy between #normies and #techies.
Instead of thinking about things from a #Users' (normies) POV, they think of everything from an #Admin (techies) POV and wonder why more people gravitate towards #Threads or #BlueSky instead of #Mastodon.

It's #competitionAnxiety => fear of being #extinguished.
It's the #UserExperience.
It's not the job of corps to make it easier for you to host "your own shit" but to attract & keep #USERS on their platform

⬆️ Sorry if you feel spammed, but it's worth clarifying:
Look at evolution of proprietary #AppleSilicon that EXTENDED #ARM architecture for more than 16 years. Is ARM dead?
ARM struck #ALLIANCES with corps large & small (#RaspberryPi), continues to innovate, & thrive
Look to Singapore, Doha, Dubai
Look at top of stack #UX, instead of just bottom #protocols, to differentiate, attract, & keep USERS on #Mastodon
Thx

>>>> XMPP died after google talk/facebook did EEE.>> Middle E [Extend] is almost always focused on users' needs above tech devs' & admin's needs.
The Last E [Extinguish] is almost always the result of failure to #compete.
It is this #competitionAnxiety that has some in the #Mastodon community tied up in knots.
Nothing else.

⬆️ So, setting up a server is hard. So what? That's work that has to be done.
With #Threads, "users may feel a familiarity that #Mastodon cannot #COMPETE with.
That goes to the heart of #competitionAnxiety, which someone first expressed puzzlement with, and when explained what it meant, just deadpanned "I understand well enough what competition anxiety is, and it's not a term that applies even"
We cannot solve a problem until we acknowledge what it is

You can accept or reject whatever you want. If you want to know what I meant by #competitionAnxiety, click the hashtag — it was born today, so not too many toots. If you are not interested, that's fine too.
Email remains alive. Web remains alive. Both are in decline because of shift to mobile, not because of Google or Microsoft tricks.
If you feel specific threats to Mastodon or Fedi from Threads, show that. If not, please stop fear-mongering and scolding people 🙄

⬆️ @ashmueli
This is what I had in mind as a #politicalAllegory involving #competitionAnxiety — #fear of #competition.
Angry, thinking I was drowning their message with weak words like #fear instead of #threat, they identified no specific protocol weaknesses that #Threads would exploit, nor any specific #threat vectors, except nebulous fear that Threads will change our way of life.
They want to keep #Threads out, or “as far away as possible” from #Mastodon, and cannot countenance coexistence.

If you are still asking “What #competitionAnxiety?” Then you and I are not communicating.
Thanks again.

Is email dead? Is the Web dead? Are Linux/Unix dead?
Email might be dying because of other superseding technologies like mobile texting, but not because of Gmail shenanigans
You are throwing a fit over #competitionAnxiety.
If Threads does embrace AP, it will need to work with W3C to extend it before it can extinguish it. So where’s the problem?
I don’t have any #Meta account, and am not going to create a #Threads account, but they have #RightToExist next to #Mastodon

Having lived through 2 decades of #oppression under #Microsoft’s #Yoke, I don’t need a wiki link.
You fail to explain why Threads is a #threat in concrete terms, beyond nebulous #competitionAnxiety, despite me politely asking for it multiple times.
I gave examples of email & web, two most impactful technologies that withstood Microsoft’s frontal assault. *N*X itself has survived despite #Windows.
Threads has a #RightToExist on open standards. It’s competition you fear.
