  1. Protect #Arctic from 'dangerous' #climateengineering
#Polar #geoengineering aims to cool planet in unconventional ways, artificially thickening sea-ice or releasing reflective particles into atmosphere. They have gained attention as potential future tools to combat #globalwarming, alongside cutting #carbon #emissions. But, more than 40 researchers say they could bring "severe environmental damage" and urged countries to focus on reaching #netzero

  2. 🌋🌫️ Stratospheric sulfate #aerosol, as produced by large volcanic eruptions, cools the Earth & is being considered as a #ClimateEngineering method. But sulfate aerosol does not only have a cooling effect, it also traps heat, similar to #CO2. Using a simple model, #MPIM researchers Ravikiran Hegde et al. have broken down the key processes and shown that the cooling effect depends on the Earth’s surface temperature. 🌡️

  3. #ClimateEngineering off US coast could increase heatwaves in Europe, study finds - theguardian.com/environment/ar "Scientists call for regulation to stop regional use of marine cloud brightening having negative impact elsewhere" wars will be fought over this stuff

  4. #GeoEngineering:

"Various government research arms are already gaming out scenarios, looking at who might decide to carry out climate engineering and how.

Once #ClimateEngineering is deployed, countries may be more likely to blame climate engineering for extreme events such as hurricanes, floods and droughts, regardless of the evidence.

Climate engineering may spark conflicts among countries."

  5. "Our corrected data reveal that, over cooling land surfaces, shallow cumulus #clouds start to disappear at very small solar obscurations (~15%)."

"This could be a warning for climate engineering. If we eclipse the sun in the future with technological solutions, it may affect the clouds," Trees added. "Fewer clouds could partly oppose the intended effect of #ClimateEngineering, because clouds reflect sunlight and thus actually help to cool down the Earth."

  6. #NettoNegative via #CDR, aka #CarbonDioxideRemoval rettet uns, weil wir #Co2 entnehmen? Wazzup?

  9. @rahmstorf a startup that "may" have released some sulfur particles from a balloon?
apart from all the vague words used: this is such a non-news! jeez! 🙄

#ClimateEngineering of that type will require a continous investment of many billions of € per year to make a significant effect. who is going to pay for this? "rogue" actors?? to achieve an effect that is hard to constrict locally? come on. this is just silly.

NB: it's a totally diff. story when related to wheather modification.
