  1. On 26th Oct 2021, Australian PM Scott "don't-be-scared-of-coal" Morrison announced the Coalition's #NetZero2050 #ClimateTarget.

That same day, I read the document containing Morrison's 'plan'. It contained nothing to get Australia anywhere near the (already compromised idea of) #NetZero.

There was no plan, no modelling, no change in actual policies. The #ScottMorrison 'commitment' to net zero was still completely consistent with decades of #Coalhugger #Coalition policies. The target was toothless, an exercise in getting a headline to quiet the conscience of the news-skimming voter whose grandkids keep telling them climate is bad but who really wants to vote for hurting marginalised people and/or retaining their current tax loopholes (and who hasn't realised how much the #ALP embraces both anyway).

So with this week's news that #SussanLey has dropped that pretence, at least now there is one iota less dishonesty in Australian politics (albeit one with its own new lies and contradictions).

The last time the Coalition's #ClimatePolicy slightly departed from utter loyalty to the #DirtyEnergy industry was the morning of the 1st Dec 2009 in the hours before #MalcolmTurnbull was deposed as leader of her Majesty's Opposition and replaced by #TonyAbbott by a single vote.

#climatewars #SurvivalOfTheRichest

  5. Australia's new climate wars have begun, between Labor and the Greens. Resources Minister Madeleine King this morning, in defending Woodside's North-West Shelf gas juggernaut, twice pulled out the big guns by using the term "The Greens political party", a Labor favourite. She also criticised them for "blocking progress" in the Senate, a line that appeals to Labor's rust belt. The Greens would no doubt see that as negotiating on bad policies to secure meaningful progress – which is the job they were elected to do. The battle lines have been drawn. Just don't mention political donations. #auspol #ClimateWars

  7. Listening to @thefinalstrawradio where a surprising twist is Australia's exported shame, Rio Tinto, was brought up in the context of the Serbian anti-corruption protests as "comically evil" - as their mining of Serbian lithium in the Jadar valley has resulted in poisoning the drinking water - is garning support from China, Russia the US and the EU to suppress the protests.

  8. The Weekly Times (Murdoch News Corp paper) has a story just published today on CFA volunteers in Western Victoria anti-renewables strike.

Here is the Response from the Australian Firefighters Climate Alliance (AFCA) identifying the politicisation of firefighting in the #ClimateWars.

"the AFCA disagrees with the brigades who are trying to weaponise a duty of care they have to their communities, for the sake of political impact.

  11. @rahmstorf ...meanwhile in the OPEC office:
Mankind is currently pumping 102140000 barrels of crude oil PER DAY out of the earth. More than ever before...

    No turnaround in sight yet.

  12. Opposition Leader Dutton to ditch Paris Agreement: analysis reveals nuclear impact on emissions.

A future Coalition Government would dump Australia's 43% 2030 emissions target and commit to nuclear and gas electricity generation and implement a moratorium on utility scale wind and solar.

I have read the CANA modelling of nuclear power which is conservative and uses France as the example for ramping up nuclear, with a first power station in 15-16 years, a similar estimate that CSIRO said may be the earlest timeframe..

Here are the modelled emissions profile graph and the electricity generation profile in the National Electricity Market (NEM) under a nuclear scenario. They are not in the news article.

Nuclear would be a disaster for Australia's emissions, and extremely costly and need to be heavily subsidised.

Highway to Hell. Climate change and #Australia’s future.

She sums up the lack of political will & current #climateWars disguised as #Greenwash stressing the urgency for #ClimateAction .

February 2, 2010 – #Australia🇦🇺 in the grip of ideological #ClimateWars with new #LiberalParty Opposition Leader Tony Abbott announcing his "Direct Action" climate policy (sic), while Labor Prime Minister Kevin Rudd's gang - for reasons that defy comprehension - introduce their stupid Climate Pollution Reduction Scheme (CPRS) (already watered down after negotiations with former Liberal leader Malcolm Turnbull) for its 3rd failure…

  20. What is Australia's fair share when it comes to financing the necessary climate transition?

In a headline today, the Australian government has pledged AU$150m in #ClimateFinance for Pacific nations.

Good news, right? Isn't this PM Anthony #Albanese "ending the #ClimateWars" by actually doing what #Australia ought to have done years ago? Let's consider that assumption.

Back in 2009 at the much hyped, but ultimately deeply disappointing international climate negotiations in #Copenhagen known as #COP15, one step forward that was agreed, even as more comprehensive or ambitious agreements slipped away was that the wealthy nations of the world (including #Australia) collectively pledged to be providing US$100b each year to help the poorer nations transition away from #FossilFuels (#ClimateMitigation) and develop in ways that help societies adapt to the warming that cannot be mitigated (#ClimateAdaptation).

  21. @tanweerdar

You’d think that by 2023 we would have had it figured out.
I mean, all the old movies and tv shows seemed to believe that at this point we would have flying cars.

It really couldn’t be further from the truth. In a world where we were supposed to have it all, we’ve completely lost the plot. It’s more of a 1984 world than it is a Jetsons world–and that is probably an understatement.

I know we’ve used up all of our luck, and I can see places where it is clear we have faltered. What else is there to do but bide our time waiting for the water wars? Climate change is… climate changing. It’s only a matter of time now, isn’t it?

    We’re too far gone.
There’s nothing we can do aside from prepare and brace for impact.

I sighed, closed the old, dusty journal, grabbed my gas mask and supplies, and prepared to head out into the hellscape the world had become.

“You clever girl,” I thought to myself. “You never knew how correct you would turn out to be.”
