  2. i am determined to single-pawedly bring back the #chumby ecosystem

  3. i've published my first #chumby widget:

    chumby.com/guide/C78EE13C-CE96

it's a weather widget that's inspired by WeatherSTAR 4000-era The Weather Channel, currently it's limited to guessing your location but the next step will be making a way to choose an exact location to report about

  5. #electronics #chumby #reverseengineeing can anyone help me figure out what diode might've been here? another one in the same board with the same footprint reads 3U and in a pinch i could take apart another working chumby but because it involves peeling off glue i would rather not (and i don't think looking at that one would tell me anything)

i believe this diode is keeping the chumby from powering as without it RAW_PWR and GND on the chumbilical read 0V although i can see the input 12V if...

  7. i have automatic test deployment set up from pressing F5 in #flashdevelop to seeing my widget running on my #chumby

this involves FTPing the output SWF to my server and then making the chumby play that file from the internet. no USB drives needed!

  8. there's a classic mac os inspired clock! and the calculator and puzzle are interactive in it!! #chumby

  9. Nice debugging story: Why is my CPU usage always 100%? (Upgrading my Chumby 8 kernel part 9)

It reminds me of when I was an embedded developer. I also did one of my studies projects with the Chumby, so that was fun.

  13. We're working on a piece about #retro darlings — those pieces of #tech that refuse to die because of communities that have sprung up around them to keep them alive. We're looking at #Pebble / @rebble, #Sony #aibo, #chumby, and various retro #gaming #consoles and #handhelds, as well as numerous #retrocomputing platforms — what are some other beloved devices and dedicated folks and communities that should be on our radar? 🤘💾🤘

  15. Well, it finally happened: the "Absolutely Apes" cam (of the orangutans at the San Diego Zoo) stopped working on the #Chumby. It had a good, long run of about 16 years. I lack the skills to go in and edit the Flash code to correct whatever changed -- the cam is still up (see link below) but it doesn't work on the Chumby anymore.

I use the Chumby as a clock on my desk, and as a standalone streaming radio player, plugged into a Tivoli iSongBook for decent stereo.

  17. Tonight, I found that I can generate executable code for the #Chumby using Go as a cross-compiler, since it supports ARMv5 as a target. Now to see if I can get any of the Go framebuffer packages to work with it's old, old Linux kernel.

  19. For all of you who are using the Sony Dash as a Chumby (I'm almost sure that of anyone who sees this, it's just me, but nevertheless) -- the weather interface stopped working again at the end of August, as it did last February. And like then, intrepid maintainer Duane found a fix (an alternative feed, perhaps). Details here (I've been checking every so often):

  20. Also, before they left, they asked, "Do you need any help getting any of your other devices hooked up?" and I thought, I'd like to watch these guys deal with the clunky #Chumby internet interface.

    But I said no thanks.

  24. Another major accomplishment today: got the weather display on my Sony Dash / Chumby working again, thanks to the fine Duane at chumby. And I got to ssh into the Dash and fiddle with some of the files, which is always fun.

  25. They were relatively inexpensive Linux appliances, with a touch screen, that acted as a clock, Internet radio, and feed reader. They launched in the mid-2000's before we all had smartphones, and was meant as a high-tech alternative to the bedside clock radio.

The company went belly up around 2012, although there was some functionality remaining (the original device needs to connect to the Chumby network to function)  thanks to one of the founders and now, for a subscription fee, you can still keep your Chumby operating.

However, Doug Brown bought one with the goal of using it for his own applications. But the 2.6.28 kernel is showing its age. So he decided to push a new kernel on the device.

If you are a Chumby enthusiast, don’t get too excited. The goal isn’t to provide the existing Chumby apps with a new kernel, [Doug] says that’s probably impossible. Instead, he wants a modern booting infrastructure and kernel on the device for his own software.

I can still see my original Chumby sitting on the top of the book case in front of my computer. I suppose it could be re-purposed actually, as it runs on Linux.
