A #vintage computer I wished I had kept around: the #Sony News Unix workstation. IIRC mine had a MIPS R3000 CPU and it ran a System V derivative. Supposedly a "portable" but it weighed a hefty 8kg (18 pounds) 😅.
While working at Sony, I got to meet the project leader for these systems: Toshitada Doi-san. At that moment he was responsible for #Aibo, Sony's robot dog, and we were cooperating on the robot's operating system. -
Reminder that #AI would understand the world better if it was #embodied: https://arstechnica.com/science/2025/02/to-help-ais-understand-the-world-researchers-put-them-in-a-robot/
It’s been my conviction since I learned of #developmental #robotics, around 2012. Since early 2000’s they explored this in the #Sony CSL in #Paris, with the famous #aibo.
Check out Luc Steels’ "Talking Heads", Pierre-Yves Oudeyer’s "Aux sources de la parole" for an exciting take on #intelligence. Robotics at #Google X was all about that. As machines get better at learning, it’s good to try again!

"There was a prototype robotic pet running around the lab [at Sony], but Otsuki took a dim view of its hyperactive behavior and decided it wasn’t a product that anyone would want to buy. He envisioned something more lifelike. During their meeting, he gave Noma a surprising piece of advice: Go to Ryōan-ji, a famed Buddhist temple in Kyoto. Otsuki was telling Noma that to develop the right kind of robot for Sony, it needed Zen."

#aibo repair: As someone who grew up as a computer geek without any Internet whatsoever, nowadays it feels magical to fix things like my Aibo ERS-111 robot dog dead battery. Ah Yes, i could 3D print this part to make a Sony NP-F550 battery fit (https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:5435147) and, oh yes, i can get that battery delivered in < 20 hours from Amazon. Amazing! #retrocomputing
Watch this space for fixed dog. 🙂

Can't sleep, wandering about what happened to those AIBO bots.

We're working on a piece about #retro darlings — those pieces of #tech that refuse to die because of communities that have sprung up around them to keep them alive. We're looking at #Pebble / @rebble, #Sony #aibo, #chumby, and various retro #gaming #consoles and #handhelds, as well as numerous #retrocomputing platforms — what are some other beloved devices and dedicated folks and communities that should be on our radar? 🤘💾🤘

With new APIs, Sony’s robot dog Aibo could be the smart home assistant you’ve always wanted
Sony says you can now use a web-based API to program its adorable Aibo robot dog to do new tricks — and you might even be able to make it your smart home’s best friend.
And if the first thing that came to your mind about coding new tricks for Aibo was, “I feel bad programming Aibo,” Sony addresses exactly that in an FAQ:
Q : I feel bad programming aibo.
A: When you execute the program, aibo has the freedom to decide which specific behavior to execute depending on his/her psychological state. The API respects aibo’s feeling so that you can enjoy programming while aibo stays true to himself/herself.
It's interesting to see how these personal pet robots are evolving. But in most cases, these are evolving as pets and not talking robots. As we've seen in previous studies too although humans know these are robots the humans do tend to respond with feeling empathy for them. https://squeet.me/objects/962c3e10bc2cf747e55ed3e951dc472076e49ee4 -
