  10. And now our feature presentation of sorts: “Oratorio de Noël, Op. 12” AKA “The Christmas Oratorio”- a cantata-esque work composed by Camille Saint-Saëns 🇫🇷 (youtu.be/Sr7WiMBYzAE?si=0305iu) in what is said to have been under 2 weeks time while he was working as a church organist. You can follow along with a free score available here (archive.org/details/imslp-de-n)

  11. Luckily, the mindblowingly talented Kanneh-Mason family doesn’t play those games and used the real deal in their 2020 recording (Behind the Scenes: youtube.com/playlist?list=PLQm) and 2021 Family Proms performance of the piece (with narration: youtu.be/VigoDtL-91A?si=RuBUJ8 / without narration: youtu.be/GWANMzwff3c?si=U_XaSk)

  12. First we have the 7th movement from Camille Saint-Saëns “Carnival of the Animals”: “Aquarium” (youtu.be/KOx7zmO5ppw?si=DrJL_c). This movement famously features the Benjamin Franklin invented instrument known as The Glass Armonica. Unfortunately due to 18th century rumors that using the instrument caused both musicians and listeners to go mad a lot of Glass Armonicas were destroyed so many performances of “Carnival of the Animals utilize Glockenspiels or Celestra instead.

  13. “Oratorio de Noël, Op. 12” by Camille Saint-Saëns is more famously known as his “Christmas Oratorio”. It’s a cantata-esque piece that’s got a little bit of everything for everyone: vocal and instrumental soloists, strings, harp, the organ, a chorus. You can follow along with a score available for free here (archive.org/details/imslp-de-n)

  14. Camille Saint-Saëns (October 9, 1835-1921)🇫🇷 was a French Romantic era composer, conductor and Organist/Pianist. Similar to Britten, he was gay and composed pretty much everything from vocal pieces to piano concertos- in fact he was the first major French composer to ever write one!

  15. Musical Interlude: OK, more Saint-Saëns. Sorry, I'm on a kick lately. Here's one of his symphonic poems...it's based on an ancient Greek myth where Heracles is forced to serve a queen and spin for her....but some of you will want to intone "Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men?" before it's over.

"Le rouet d'Omphale (Omphale's Spinning Wheel)," composed by Camille Saint-Saëns, performed by an unidentified orchestra, possibly the London Sinfonietta.
