I believe in this case that “Lydian Mode” = the acknowledgement of the lack of the B-flats that are expected and instead extend some bars an extra beat to symbolize the idea of “continuing onward, slightly changed”. Also, at this point in time the use of Lydian Mode in composition was almost entirely unheard of!

This specific movement was written in 1825 following Beethoven’s recovery from a serious intestinal illness that may have been some form of inflammatory bowel disorder complicated further by his sensorneural hearing loss due to systemic inflammation. Due to this experience Beethoven subtitled it “Holy song of thanksgiving of a convalescent to the Deity, in the Lydian Mode”.
