On 16 April 1854: #FranzLiszt's symphonic poem "Mazeppa" premieres at the Court Theatre in Weimar.

A Hungarian Rhapsody

Back home to the news that Viktor Orbán has been ousted in today’s election in Hungary I thought I’d share something celebratory. Here is a classic recording of the Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2 in C-sharp minor by Franz Liszt played by György Cziffra. The second is by far the most famous of the 19 Hungarian Rhapsodies Liszt wrote, although it is based on Romanian rather than Hungarian tunes. Many recordings are available – I have three on CD – and this is my favourite. Cziffra was a very talented jazz musician too (here is his take on Duke Ellington’s Sophisticated Lady); Liszt himself was no mean improviser.

I’m not sure of the recording date, but was made in Hungary (when it was still behind the Iron Curtain) so it would have to be before 1956, as Cziffra escaped to Vienna then and eventually took up French citizenship.

Both “Totentanz” by Thomas Adès and “Totentanz…” by Liszt take inspiration from the late middle age artistic genre known as the Danse Macabre AKA The Dance of Death, which is centered around the concept of Momento Mori AKA “ remember you must die”

Our final piece is Franz Liszt’s “Totentanz: Paraphrase on Dies Irae,S.126” (https://youtu.be/DS-ppx_HtiI?si=DEPNYIJ3afE_oJ5V) which is noted for combining the theme of the “Totentanz” with the Gregorian chant melody “Dies irae” which loosely translates to “The Day of Wrath”. Also, like basically all Liszt pieces there’s A LOT of versions. This is the version as edited by German composer Emil von Sauer (Source:random picture of a program that I think might have been for this performance)

#Songoftheweek: Einst (F. Liszt)

'Einst' is a minimal song, composed by someone we usually associate with songs of wide melodies, daring high notes and exuberant piano: Franz Liszt. He wrote it around 1878 (eight years before his death) and it's really beautiful.
