Explanation dinner concert: Inspired by legendary jazz clubs like the Blue Note in New York and Ronnie Scotts in London, Contra is now the one and only place in Amsterdam where you can combine mesmerising live music with a haute cuisine dining experience. A dinner ticket comes together with a menu for a set price that will be shared later on, there is also a small amount of tickets available without dinner. The breaks are for the audience to enjoy each others company, the sets are to listen to the music and don’t disturb the concert. Doubting on when to have dinner at Contra? Realize that dinner concerts are a concert in the 1st place. If necessary our staff can and will ask people to be attentive of the musicians and the other visitors that are there to enjoy the music.

ZaZoo is an ensemble born in Amsterdam. Their music blends the improvisational qualities of jazz with the colors and interplay of classical music, as well as grooves and textures from electronic music. They experiment with a unique lineup, featuring Elsa Le Moigne on cello, Willy Becuwe on trombone, Tejas Ziegler on keyboard and Dane Paris on drums. Elsa leads and composes for the ensemble, however the musical roles are fluid: each player evolves as a soloist, bassist, accompanist, or section player throughout the various atmospheres of their music. ZaZoo has been awarded the 2nd prize of Jazz in the Park Competition (RO) and was among the finalists of the Jonge Makers Prijs (NL).

  5. Timeless Voices at Contra: JAÏNDA x Laura Dooge

Contra, Saturday, May 30 at 09:00 PM GMT+2

A special night bringing two exceptional singers to touch your soul all evening long.

At 21:00, Laura Dooge opens the night with timeless songs from the Great American Songbook, translating the romance of the past into the present. You might just forget these songs were written in the 1930s — we still have “a crush on you” and sometimes smoke a little too much “at the end of a love affair.” Backed by an incredible band and guest soloists, she revives the spirit of classic jazz clubs with warmth and elegance, performing music by Gershwin, Berlin and Ellington. A cum laude graduate of the Conservatorium van Amsterdam, she has performed at leading venues and was awarded at the Laren Jazz Award.

From 23:00 onwards, resident artist JAÏNDA takes over. A singer-songwriter blending soul, R&B, pop and jazz, her music explores themes of self-discovery, vulnerability and strength. With her powerful voice and love for big band arrangements, she captivates audiences and leaves a lasting impression.

    Joris Nederpelt Lazarom – piano/synth

Bout du Monde is echter hun eigen project. Hun eerste album genaamd ‘Hirondelle’ kwam uit in mei 2020, het tweede album ‘Uncovered’ verscheen in 2022. Het derde album wordt verwacht in 2026.

Formed in Wallonia, Belgium, at the “End of the World”, Bout du Monde is a quartet comprising four renowned Dutch musicians:

    Robert Mollee         – saxophones
    Joris Nederpelt Lazarom     – piano/synth
    Rob IJsendijk         – bass guitar
    Aad Faasse             – drums

Bout du Monde, however, is their own project. Their first album, entitled ‘Hirondelle’, was released in May 2020, and their second album, ‘Uncovered’, appeared in 2022. “Lingela”; A folk/jazz quintet that preserves Lithuanian traditional music by bringing it to the world of modern jazz.

A conversation between two female voices, a trombone, and a rhythm section takes you back to the times, when the deep Lithuanian forests were surrounded by songs and tales about mythical creatures. “Lingela” presents a new way of developing this authentic repertoire using the colors of jazz harmonies and different rhythms. The trombonist/singer and band leader Kamilė Makarevičiūtė brings a new sound inspired by her deep connection to the Lithuanian heritage.

The idea about this project emerged after leaving her country a couple of years ago and has gotten stronger as a response to the recent political events in and around her country. Kamilė and the international musicians that shape this band believe that it is important to keep the tradition alive, especially during these difficult times by bringing people together. Their sound is deeply inspired by performers like GANNA, Merope and Elektroninės Sutartinės.

    Band members:
    Kamilė Makarevičiūtė - trombone/vocals/arrangement/composition
    Rūta Zareckaitė - vocals
    Éber González González - drums
    Grégoire Kieffer - piano
Søren Juul Christensen - double bass

  9. Red Light Jazz: afternoon concert with the Martin Diaz Quartet

Contra, Friday, June 5 at 05:00 PM GMT+2

Martin Diaz stands among a select group of musicians who effortlessly bridge the often-contradictory poles between tradition and innovation. At the forefront of the saxophonists and composers of his generation, he has forged a unique artistic identity, expertly weaving jazz with a rich tapestry of musical influences. This project appears from the continuation of his first quintet, this time becoming a quartet where he stands as a leader of a great band formed by some of the best musicians in the Spanish and Dutch Jazz scene.

This band's music is directly influenced by and connected to various concepts from the world of psychoanalysis. The album title, as its central theme, presents "El Goce," a Lacanian term derived from the French word "jouissance," referring to a repeated subjective pleasure that transforms into something more akin to displeasure. With these concepts as a basis, the psychoanalysis serves as a framework for his writing and composition, shaping both the structure and emotional depth of the music. The interplay between desire, repetition, and the limits of pleasure manifests in the band's sound, creating a sonic experience that reflects the tension between fulfillment and frustration. By embracing these psychoanalytic themes, the album offers a complex and immersive journey that challenges listeners to engage with music on both an intellectual and visceral level.

  11. Jazzy Thursdays invites: Tiago Lageira Trio

Contra, Thursday, June 11 at 08:30 PM GMT+2

Tiago's music is undeniably influenced by a vibrant mix of cultural heritages, from Fado and traditional Brazilian rhythms, due to his birthplace in Portugal, to the sound of legendary Jazz pioneers, in which he immersed himself after moving to Amsterdam.

Once in Amsterdam, a young Tiago found himself without anything to do. That is when he received a gift that would change his future, a guitar. A couple hours later his fingers were bleeding from the random noises he played. One year later he started to receive guitar lessons at a local music school, which encouraged him to gradually dive into the local Jazz scene. Within a couple of months, he was already performing at the BIMhuis with the Young Talents Jazz Band.

After graduating from the conservatory and inspired by John Coltrane, Pat Martino, George Benson, João Bosco, Elis Regina and Pedro Jóia, Tiago tested himself by participating in some of the biggest music competitions in Europe today. He performed at the North Sea Jazz Festival, he was one of the finalists at the Bucharest International Jazz Competition 2020 and he won the UK Jazz Guitar Competition in 2020, among others.

Furthermore, using his Portuguese roots and playing his trusted Godin, Tiago brought a modern version of Fado to the Dutch TV competition “We Want More”, which he ended up winning as part of the duo FADOpelos2. This resulted in national fame in both The Netherlands and Portugal, where he played live on TV with the renowned Fado singer Mariza.

His current projects include FADOpelos2, CoolHaven Quintet, Trio Dos Anciões and the Amsterdam Big Band.

    Tiago Lageira - Guitar

    Simon Osuna - Double Bass

  12. Red Light Jazz: afternoon concert with Avishai Darash Trio

Contra, Sunday, June 7 at 03:00 PM GMT+2

    Bio:
Pianist, composer, and bandleader Avishai Darash presents his new trio at the Red Light Jazz Festival in Amsterdam, featuring drummer Joe Blaxx and bassist Omer Govreen. With Heart-Bop, the trio explores the language of hard bop from a contemporary perspective. Rooted in the tradition of the 1950s and ’60s, the focus is on groove, clarity, and interplay, with a program of original compositions and arrangements that both respect the idiom and reflect a modern approach. The trio treats swing as a flexible concept that is constantly evolving, shaped by their individual voices and collective interaction. Rather than reproducing a historical sound, Darash and his trio place this tradition in a new framework—retaining its directness and energy while remaining open to a broader, contemporary musical context. The result is a clear and accessible program that bridges tradition and modernity, approaching jazz as a shared and continuously evolving language.

  17. Futures on Our Own Terms

Perdu, Saturday, June 6 at 02:00 PM GMT+2

On 6 June, Perdu is hosting Futures on Our Own Terms, a conversation with designer educator and researcher Dr. Danah Abdulla and poet and outreach worker Sarona Abuaker about their work on Countless Palestinian Futures [palifutures.com]. Organised by the Spatial Justice for Palestine Network NL, the event forms part of a broader solidarity and knowledge-sharing initiative, advancing spatial knowledge on Palestine through research, education and public programming in the Dutch context.

    14:00 – 17:00 Countless Palestinian Futures

Countless Palestinian Futures (CPF) is a conversational game that moves conversations around Palestine beyond historical or present framing and toward tools that help us think through what a return to Palestine could be. It is centred on the questions: How is return imagined? and in what ways is return conceptualised in a landscape dominated by the materiality of territory, home, and nationhood?

Created by Danah Abdulla and Sarona Abuaker, CPF aims to engage and stimulate the imagination by helping diverse practitioners develop tangible outcomes and ideas around Palestinian futures framed around near, medium, and long-term actualities. The game is inspired by Umberto Eco‘s notion of the ’open work,‘ because it can be read in an infinite number of ways depending on what the participants bring to, and how they inform, future iterations.

Participation in CPF is open to Palestinian and Arab cultural producers, policy makers, activists, academics and organisers. Registration is limited, so please send a short email of interest briefly introducing yourself to [email protected]

    18:00 – 19:30 Futures On Our Terms

In conversation with architect / researcher Ali T. As’ad, Danah Abdulla and Sarona Abuaker reflect on the conceptualisation of CPF. Through a discussion about their practice, thinking and process, they will explore the concept of imagination more broadly, the role of CPF today and its ability to imagine Palestinian return and a future for Palestinians in today’s geopolitical landscape.

To register for the open talk: please use the Tickets button above

In her talk, Alevizou will discuss several case studies to analyse how major technological shifts have impacted the publishing models, governance, and creative labour of reference works; the evolution of the genre and the modalities of representation and access; and the range of uses and symbolic meanings of encyclopedias as diverse nodes within broader information economies, as commodities and as public goods.

  23. Brainwave #5 | Mar Azul: Reflections on Loss and Migratory Grief in the Cape Verdean Diaspora

    VOX-POP, Thursday, June 4 at 07:00 PM GMT+2

What is the connection between migratory grief and the loss of a loved one? How does an individual’s migratory background shape their experience of grief? And how do funeral rituals travel across borders into new contexts? Join us as we delve into how different Cape Verdean diasporas engage with these questions.

Although a universal experience, grief is a deeply intimate experience shaped by our identity and expressed through cultural norms. This evening seeks to intersect two experiences of grief: migratory grief and the loss of a loved one.

Migration is etched into the social fabric of the Cape Verdean people. With more people living outside of the archipelago than on the islands themselves. Therefore, the theme of migratory grief has been explored and is known deeply amongst the Cape Verdean people. In her thesis, Jennifer Silva explored grief and continuing bonds in the Cape Verdean diaspora in Brazil. She will discuss her findings.

The event features a screening of the film, The Last Harvest by Nuno Miranda Benoventura. The film paints an intergenerational portrait of the Cape Verdean community and diaspora in Lisbon, exploring topics such as sense of belonging and diasporic grief. The screening is followed by an aftertalk with the director of the film.

To close, we delve back into the Dutch context – where a large Cape Verdean community lives – together with Janilda Bartolomeu, a multidisciplinary Cape Verdean artist who explores the topic of grief and melancholy in her work.
