  1. Just finished my raw notes on Adam Grant's Originals

This book isn’t about reckless risk-taking — it’s about questioning the default, balancing risk portfolios, and building systems that welcome dissent.

    Key Takeaways:
    – Question defaults
    – Balance risk like a portfolio
    – Volume > perfection
    – Procrastinate with purpose
    – Protect dissent

  2. Finished Jill Paton Walsh's *Knowledge of Angels* this morning. Overall, I thought it was terrific, and a really pleasant find --- I'd never heard of it until a few months ago, where I saw it listed as a Booker nominee back in 1994.

A brief summary (no real spoilers) and a few quick thoughts about the book in replies.

  3. Here are some of my notes from "Feel-Good Productivity" book.

Overall, it’s a nice and easy-to-read book that I would recommend to anyone new to the concept of productivity.

The book integrates ideas from many other productivity-related books, making it as an all-in-one package. It also borders on being a philosophy book, trying to change your mindset on how you think about productivity.

  4. There are also gems on nearly every page, like:

"I would estimate that a thousand religions die each year. We're very limited in our sense of how many religions there are. And I'd say that a thousand come into being each year." (p. 16)

Or same page, just a few paragraphs below:

"... unlike some of our political groups, there are no single-issue religions. There really aren't. Part of the problem is they have no modesty. So they'll talk about everything, and have a belief about it, and it makes them fun. It also makes them asses sometimes. It does both."

  5. In a gesture of procrastination, I grabbed this book of Jonathan Z Smith interviews off the shelf and started reading. I have owned it for a while but never read it - and the first interview (from UChicago's newspaper in 2008) has me over here absolutely rolling on the floor w/laughter.

  6. Started reading Charles Taylor's "Cosmic Connections" ... Only about 100 pages in but oh man, do i already have some thoughts.

Will need some time to process them into something shareable. But I'm esp. struggling to understand the book's central focus --- I feel like he has three or four closely related claims here that he is moving between without always distinguishing between them.

I know this is vague... Consider this a placeholder, i guess.

  7. Reading Brene Brown’s book “The Gifts of Imperfection” and she has this section at the very end covering how she does book notes that I found very interesting and thought worth sharing, as I’d not seen it mentioned anywhere.

She calls it an Integration Index, and she creates one for every book she reads. Some great ideas here that can be incorporated into digital Tools for Thought.

Love some of her standard index section ideas.

  8. Hey, if you're interested in #Tana, here's a tour of the #workflows and structures I'm using to manage everything from #todo's to #BookNotes to #DreamJournals ... plus some thoughts on why Tana is leading me to rethink some of my own long-held software and data principles. If you tune in, please let me know how this inspires you!

  9. Also, from Dogen's #zen essays. The concept of a "myriad of things" is very similar to Kant's concept of the "manifold of sensibility", essentially
both are trying to highlight the novel, flux-like aspect of reality, the fact that the concept of objects are subjective (no pun intended). It would be a really cool plot twist if it turned out that Kant had read Dogen (very highly unlikely in real life).

  10. It is true that this selection of essays from #zen master Dogen contains just one joke, but the good news is that the joke is worth it:

  12. Each language (verbal or programming) brings a set of vocabulary and culture along with it. I always admired every languages because of the culture associated with each.

But, language also controls our thoughts! It was a relevation for me after reading 1984 that our thoughts are limited by the set of words (vocabulary) we can use and less vocabulary means less freedom of thought!

    Quite an eye opener, 1984!
