I understand the dramatic necessity of combining all sins into a single character, in the sense that having more characters would lead to dilution of the story, but it has the effect of making Professor Grimes into a caricature of the "supervisor from hell", rather than an actual one.

I'm reading "Katabasis" by Rebecca F. Kuang and I guess it's a book that will be particularly appreciated by anyone in academia. It's fiction and mostly set in hell but still deals with a lot of what's wrong with academia and its denizens.
Especially with PhD supervisors -- and I have been one for a very long time. -

Currently halfway through Katabasis. What I love about R.F. Kuang, whether it's Poppy War, Yellowface, Katabasis, is how deeply flawed her protagonists are. Sometimes actively unlikeable. But there's always a logic to the flaws. She explains without excusing. #bookstodon #rfkuang #katabasis

@craftykraken I mostly love #RFKuang. #Katabasis was a slog, though. Yeah, it was absolutely supposed to be one for the characters, by the premise, but I didn't need to relate that hard.

Book 33: “Katabasis” by #RFKuang.
Kuang is clearly smart and has good ideas. Not a very good writer though. Nothing a good editor can’t help, but hers continues to let her down. Seriously, a book where the chapters just follow the story (almost entirely) in a straight line? Great premise—PhD student descends into Hell to retrieve her advisor—but the linearity gets old REALLY fast. 541 pages. Like “Babel,” the writing doesn’t merit this count.
