  1. Bird Nerd Report – July 2026

There’s not much to report this month.  With the end of spring migration, heat waves, the World Cup and other events, I’ve not set aside any time for birding.  All the birds listed below are from casual observations, such as the birds I saw on the river behind Centreville Bank Stadium when I attended a Boston Legacy soccer game last weekend.  I’m looking forward to some bird walks and field trips in August.

    Life List =  168
    2026 Year List =  110
    Complete July 2026 List = 17

  6. Me watching show set in the American Southwest: "Okay, so I was pleased the first time I heard the mountain chickadee, but are you trying to tell me the chickadees are chill and happy in ALL of these scenes? NONE of these human crimes and disturbances are raising the Chickadee Threat Level to non-zero levels? Pshaw!"

  11. My curmudgeon level was just lowered after seeing r/birding rallying around a post about someone unexpectedly seeing an usual, injured bird in Times Square NYC to find said bird, a Virginia Rail, because two volunteers from the National Bid Alliance (was Audubon) are actively searching for it to make sure it survives!

  16. There were at least a dozen herons here. I’d been looking first at the water’s edge for herons hunting before spotting the first two herons up in the trees to the left of the water in the photo. Then I kept seeing heron after heron!

  21. Oooh, my #Merlin #BirdOfTheDay is a California Scrub Jay! Might be the first day I manage to get this achievement!

I was hopeful yesterday since it was a Green Teal and I took Bertie for a walk by the Tualatin River and some wetlands. Not a single duck type avian anywhere!

  31. What is this robin doing? Is this a mating display? It was just sitting there on the ground, wings spread over the ground for several minutes, before picking through leaves for bugs. #BirdPhotography #Birding #BirdLovers #BirdWatchers #BirdsOfInstagram #BirdNerd #BackyardBirding #WildlifePhotography

  34. This weekend, I made eye contact with a black vulture, and it was one of the most profound moments. I could tell such a sweet soul lived behind those eyes. I was taken aback by how soft her eyes were. I love our bird babies. #musings #birdnerd #birder #blackvulture

  36. Me watching a dark movie with lots of murders set in Alaska (but filmed in the Canadian Rockies): “Huh, what kind of chickadee was that? Do they have any we don’t have in Oregon? The call was too brief for me to be sure if it was one I know! Oh yes, umm, murders. Yes.”

(Looked it up later and Alaska — and Canada — have several types I know, AND another, the Boreal Chickadee!)
