  8. Hany Mehanna (هاني مهنى) – The Miracles of The Seven Dances (عجائب الرقصات السبعة) (1973, Egypt)

Our next spotlight is on number 13 on The List, submitted by Almoehi.

Hany Mehanna (b. 1947) – “the organ king of Cairo” – is a renowned composer, arranger, and producer who started his career in music backing some of Egypt’s and the greater Arab world’s “Golden Age” icons (including Umm Kulthum, Warda, Fayza Ahmed, and Abdel Halim Hafez) and playing in the legendary Al-Firqa Al-Masiya (“The Diamond Orchestra”). On this, his only full-length solo album – “the belly dance holy grail” – we catch a glimpse of why Mehanna’s funky and hypnotic psychedelic experiments on the keyboard made him a key (sorry) figure in making the keyboard a key (again, sorry) instrument in modern Egyptian music. We also get to witness one of the greatest album covers to ever exist – like, just look at that, it’s absolutely breathtaking! Mehanna would go on to write the score of some 93 films and 38 TV series[1] and, uh, share a luxury jail space with the sons of ousted Egyptian President Mubarak.[2] Life can take some interesting turns.

    1. Some of this work is captured in the fantastic Music For Airplanes compilation. ↩︎
    2. In 2014-15, Mehanna served 6 months of a 5-year sentence for, if I’m understanding it correctly, refusing to let a big bank out of a real estate contract, or “seizing public money” (?). ↩︎

  10. My hero! This dude is as brave AF!

A Lebanese dancer defies extremist threats and social norms with his sold-out performances

by Malak Harb and Kareem Chehayeb
    September 13, 2025

Excerpt: "#AlexandrePaulikevitch put on his white dress and wig and danced his way to center stage, knowing that the extremist groups who had threatened him before his controversial recital might be waiting for him outside the theater.

"The Lebanese dancer’s sold-out performance to a cheering crowd at a popular #Beirut venue had angered #fundamentalist movements ranging from the #RightWing #ChristianSoldiersOfGod to #SunniIslamists.

"The fundamentalists say Paulikevitch is 'promoting #homosexuality' because he wears dresses and corsets and undulates to classical Arabic music in a way which society largely sees as exclusive to women.

"Paulikevitch says he’s breaking social norms and reintroducing forms of dance that were commonplace for men as recently as the early 20th century.

"Lebanon is seen as a place of relative tolerance in the region when it comes to #LGBTQ+ rights, following years of #activism from the #QueerCommunity and supporters. But the community still faces restrictions and even violence."

  12. Working on this short and getting reference videos has reinforced one belief for me: Belly dancing was originally a male art. I think a lot of Egyptians I have met and how its possible for the women (like me) to not know dancing, but the men always do and when they dance, its always so much better than women. I think belly dancing can be a feminine art, but we often forget that many men do it and they look really sexy when they dance too.

  13. At the turn of the 21st century, foreign-born dancers weren’t allowed to perform belly dancing in Cairo, because it would smear the heritage and culture related to the art form. The ban was lifted in 2004.
