In a groundbreaking display of font-related melodrama, #Airbus unleashes the #B612 cockpit typeface upon an unsuspecting world. ✈️ Meanwhile, GitHub's got your back with #AI witchcraft, promising to transform your spaghetti code into "intelligent apps" faster than you can say "Ctrl+C, Ctrl+V." 🤖💻

It's that time of year again: Time to contemplate the possibility of an #asteroid apocalypse - and how we can head it off. A planetary protection proposal by four graduate students has won this year's #Schweickart Prize, named after Apollo 9 astronaut (and asteroid activist) Rusty Schweickart. https://cosmiclog.com/2025/06/26/a-plan-to-manage-asteroid-mining-wins-schweickart-prize/ #B612 #Space #AsteroidDay

The #OS1337 [website](https://os1337.com) has been updated.
- We moved from #UbuntuMono to #B612Mono because the #B612 font family is licensed under SIL OFL and #Ubuntu's fonts have their own licenses.
- Also B612 is a *superior font* given that #Airbus got it designed, tested, and certified for *Civil Aviation Use*, which means it got extensive testing under harsh conditions.
Aesthetically, it's not much different!

Designing Safety-critical #interface s entails proving the #safety and operational #usability of each component.
See this experimentation-based
#typographical #design #study for safety-critical contexts.
https://enac.hal.science/hal-01022511/file/Legible_are_you_sure-.pdfIt lead #Airbus to engage a group of designers to create a special #truetype #font, called B612. You can use #B612 for free:

CW: Long thread/9
This week, @kottke linked to #B612, a free font family "designed for aircraft cockpit screens," commissioned by #Airbus. It's got all the bells and whistles (e.g. hinting) and comes in variable and monospace faces:
B612 arrived at a fortuitous moment, coinciding with a major UI overhaul in @thunderbird, the app I spend the second-most time in (I spend more in #Gedit, the bare-bones text-editor that comes with #Ubuntu, the flavor of #GNULinux I use).
