  1. Does anyone happen to know if there's an easy way to get #emacs's nov.el package to display text using the #OpenDyslexic font? I was hoping there was a customization variable, but it seems not.

Perhaps I could run it in a terminal editor and change the terminal's font, but then I'd lose things like images.

I can hack something together if I really need to, I'd just rather not if there's a simpler solution available.

Edit: I was able to do this through M-x customize-face

  2. Since I'm here I wanna get right into contributing to the community so here are some distro's I made like yesterday:

There's 2 more images but I guess I'll just reply with them.

  3. Ever since I saw @klemensstrasser have support for the OpenDyslexic font in @studysnacksapp I’ve been meaning to do the same.

I was really worried about breaking the layout of some Views.

Seeing @hidde do it made me decide to just start.

    Making good progress!

  6. Someone showed me the #font Shantell Sans, and my first impression was really good, it passed my simple #Dyslexia test: I take a one-second-or-less glance at a full large paragraph and see if I got the core of what's being mentioned.

After a day of using it, so far it's pretty good. It fits well on a desktop UI, unlike OpenDyslexic, which needs to be used in its Alta variant to work.

So far I know of the following good specialized fonts for dyslexia and vision impairment #accessibility:

  7. I am not... dyslexic. I mean, when I was a kid I'd have trouble telling POTS and STOP apart... but I have no diagnosis. Still, the #OpenDyslexic font feels a lot... roomier for reading

  8. Oh! It works! My Sony PRS-300 displays the converted epub of "A Voyage To Arcturus" with the embedded OpenDyslexic font. Don't need the font adjusted to the "normal larger baseline" I normally do with other fonts when using #OpenDyslexic, so I need to fine-tune that now...
I have the PRS+ rom on it. Here are some screenshots of two font sizes of OpenDyslexic displaying on it.

  9. My "#speedReading" basically brings me up to "normal fast" since I'm a slow reader. I am considering seeing if I can get #Calibre to embed the #OpenDyslexic #font since that also improves reading speeds...

    Giochi fatti bene?

    Esercizi per la tastiera?

    Grazie!

So @baccenfutter has been awesome and deployed the flyers we quickly threw together a week ago.

We used #Opendyslexic #font but I wonder how much good it really does. However, I do find it very legible indeed!

@infuanfu is not present to provide a POC this time. Call 5238 on dect to speak with baccenfutter. Or swing by @cbase #assembly to see if he's there. Try to remember the discount code :)

  12. #OpenDyslexic is a font that may help you read more easily, if letters do not behave for you, or if attention wanders. People I know with those challenges, love it. The site accepts donations.

  14. @emerybrooks I'm not a publisher, I am a hobbiest writer, so perhaps I don't have a stake in this discussion, but... #Ebooks provide some very wonderful things for the #disabled community.

My ex-wife in her dying years was too weak to hold up a book and didn't have the dexterity (I don't want to get into her health issues though) to hold a book and turn pages. She could prop a tablet on her lap when she would sit up in bed to eat and read.

I had a girlfriend once who was #blind and I'm still good friends with her. If she doesn't have an ebook or other electronic form she just can't read it. Yes, there are audio books but that can be exceptionally expensive for small publishers / authors.

There's also me, myself, I'm #dyslexic -- the only 2 ways I can comfortably read a text is #audiobook or with the #opendyslexic font on a #kindle / similar #ereader / tablet. For me, yes I can see the words but it is such a cognitive load to read a paperback or hardcover that I just won't do it, it isn't worth it.

So yes, you are of course worried about #plagiarism of #AI -- I agree with you. It is a HUGE issue. However, there are legal remedies for someone using your name without consent, passing things off / impersonating you. I know that legal remedy isn't available for everyone but -- it is there. Please don't advocate for those who have difficulty reading paper books to lose the ability to do so when there are other options.

Those with disabilities are marginalized enough, if you really want to get into this issue check out the hashtags and talk to the communities that it would be impacting. Please, please, understand that many of these people just don't experience the world the way the average person does. Consider that equipment for disabled people is exceedingly expensive. For example, a #braille terminal for a #visuallyimpaired person costs almost $3000! So when there is such an easy way to get the text into the hands of a blind person ready for a screen reader or other device to read it for them, please don't advocate take it away.

  15. @Tusky We added #OpenDyslexic to the #WSExport #Wikisource tool, because readers asked us to be able to generate ebooks that made use of that font.

So (as I'm not dyslexic myself), I guess it's useful! 🙂

  16. So, I'm aware of the #OpenDyslexic font (such a cool project)… is there such a thing as a monospaced font designed against dyslexia symptoms? Or am I not understanding the problem statement?

  17. @kkarhan und <3 für die Fußnote zu #openDyslexic - Typografie ist toll und die ihr verfallenden Nerds habenein Leben schon so oft besser gemacht :)

  18. @[email protected]
#OpenDyslexic is one awesome #font. I use it on my #eReader, and on #4TheWords. Sadly forcing it on Web breaks many layouts.

@rf

  20. I've published a guide on how to set up OpenDyslexic font in @Minetest! :rickhey:

#OpenDyslexic gives off the playfulness and an intent to make reading easy for various people, including dyslectics.
