  3. TechCrunch: Russian authorities block paywall removal site Archive.today. “Paywall bypass website Archive.today and several of its associated domains (including .is and .ph) have been blocked by Russian authorities, according to error pages that appeared when loading its websites. The pages appear blocked as of Monday when TechCrunch visited the websites from the U.S. East Coast. “

  4. RE: infosec.exchange/@iampytest1/1

CloudFlare has designated archive.today as a "Command and Control & Botnet", blocking it for their 1.1.1.2 DNS server, which markets itself as blocking known malicious domains.
It is not blocked on the unfiltered 1.1.1.1.

    radar.cloudflare.com/domains/d

Confirmed with my DNS checker tool:

    Cloudflare (1.1.1.1): 188.43.20.67
    Cloudflare (malware) (1.1.1.2): Blocked
    Cloudflare (malware/porn) (1.1.1.3): Blocked

  5. archive.today's domains now show a message claiming they have been seized by the Russian government.

If you have any information about this, please contact me.

Over the last week I have been dealing with a family emergency and haven't been following the archive.today news, so I had no idea this happened.

The page suggests going to blocklist.rkn.gov.ru for more information, which does not load when accessed from the United States.

  6. @8000mark @nice2meatu @gruener_skatbruder

Kleiner Hinwies noch zu den vielen Archive-Derivaten. Nur archive.org ist ein vertrauenswürdiger Dienst. Allen anderen Top Level Domains sollte man mit Skepsis begegnen.

  8. Archive.today aka. archive.is seems to:

    - manipulate stored pages
    - use their Captcha for DDoS attacks

according to this RFC at @wikipedia:

    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedi

Apparently they consider blacklisting #ArchiveToday now.

  9. @Rex_Banner

  11. The fact that so many - including Wikipedia - rely on a shady website that (unsurprisingly?) is doing some really shady stuff recently shines a light on major shortcomings of newspaper websites: they want your data to share it with 900 "partners", are nevertheless full of ads and every redesign breaks deep links to their articles.
Like Napster/Limewire before, archive.today provides a service that solves an actual need of many Internet users.

  12. Starting from the weird idea that DDoS on a WordPressDotCom would have an impact, this is either a bizarre self-own or a clever conspiracy from FBI to bring down ArchiveToday for good:

  13. Ars Technica: Wikipedia blacklists Archive.today, starts removing 695,000 archive links. “In the course of discussing whether Archive.today should be deprecated because of the DDoS, Wikipedia editors discovered that the archive site altered snapshots of webpages to insert the name of the blogger who was targeted by the DDoS. The alterations were apparently fueled by a grudge against the blogger […]

  15. RE: mastodon.social/@arstechnica/1

Oof. I use archive.today (archive.is, archive.ph, etc.) to bypass paywalls but their malicious behavior is pretty bad. 😒
