DiscogsDienstag: The Smiths – The World Won’t Listen
„Und immer, wenn wir traurig waren, und traurig waren wir ziemlich oft, gingen wir zu dir nach Hause und da hörten wir die Smiths“ singt Farin Urlaub im Refrain seiner zweiten Solo-Single „Sumisu“ (MusicCloud) aus dem Jahr 2001. Damit hat er auch mein Lebensgefühl der späten Achtzigerjahre sehr schön getroffen. The Smiths waren für mich damals sehr wichtig und ich habe mich in den Texten von Sänger Morrissey wiedergefunden. Mein Einstieg in ihre Musik war 1987 die Kompilation „The World Won’t Listen“, eine Zusammenstellung von Singles und deren B-Seiten, einige der berührensten Songs der Band. Heute bin ich ambivalent, was die Smiths angeht, nachdem Morrissey den Weg zu Xenophobie, Rassimus, Islamophobie und Verschwörungstheorien (Musikexpress) gefunden hat. Es stellt sich mir die ewige Frage, kann und soll man die Kunst vom Künstler trennen?
Ich lernte Morrissey musikalich als empfindsamen Sänger kennen, der sich für Tierrechte aussprach und gegen Thatcher, Monarchie und die allgemeinen Zustände in seiner Heimat. Vieler seiner Texte waren zudem sehr persönlich und trafen auch meinen Nerv. Heute kann ich The Smiths dagegen nicht mehr unbeschwert (was für ein Attribut in dem Zusammenhang!) hören und ich habe selbst im GothDiscoInferno erst ein Lied von ihnen gespielt, „What Difference Does It Make?“ in der Ausgabe 31. Dabei mag ich ihre Musik nach wie vor.
Jedenfalls ist „The World Won’t Listen“ ein sehr guter Einstieg gewesen. Nach den ersten drei Alben „The Smiths“ (1984), „Meat Is Murder“ (1985) und „The Queen Is Dead“ (1986) war es bereits die zweite Kompilation nach „Hatful Of Hollow“ (1984). Wie bereits erwähnt, wurden hauptsächlich die Singles zusammengestellt und mit „Panic“, „Ask“, „London“ und „Bigmouth Strikes Again“ geht das Album schon gut los. Es folgen „Shakespeare’s Sister“, nach dem sich die fast gleichnamige Band benannte, „There Is A Light That Never Goes Out“, „Shoplifters Of The World Unite“ und „The Boy With The Thorn In His Side“. „Bigmouth“ und „There Is A Light …“ stammen von Album „The Queen Is Dead“ und wurden nicht als Singles veröffentlicht.
Die zweite Seite der LP beginnt mit den sehr emotionalen B-Seiten „Asleep“, „Unloveable“, „Half A Person“ und „Strech Out And Wait“, gefolgt von der Single „That Joke Isn’t Funny Anymore“. Den Abschluss bilden das instumentale „Oscillate Wildly“, „You Just Haven’t Earned It Yet, Baby“, das ursprünglich auch als Single erscheinen sollte, was dann aber nicht geschah und „Rubber Ring“.
Der Albumtitel soll darauf zurückgehen, dass Morrissey der Auffassung war, kommerzielle Radios und Plattenkäufer würden die Band nicht angemessen würdigen. Da hatte er im Grunde ja auch Recht.
Das Cover basiert auf einem Bild des deutschen Fotografen Jürgen Vollmer aus dem Buch „Rock ‚N‘ Roll Times: The Style and Spirit of the Early Beatles and Their First Fans“.Es war schon ein großer Glücksfall, dass sich die vier Musiker in Manchester zusammengefunden haben. Das Gitarrespiel von Johnny Marr ist extraordinär und auch Bassist Andy Rourke, der leider heute, am 19. Mai, vor 3 Jahren im Alter von 59 Jahren starb und Schlagzeuger Mick Joyce trugen ihre außergewöhnlichen Parts bei. Nach diesem Album erschien im selben Jahr noch „Strangeways, Here We Come“ bevor sich die Smiths trennten. Es folgte noch das Live-Album „Rank“ (1988) und in den Neunziger Jahren einige Best-Of-Alben. Ab 1989 gab es Rechtsstreitigkeiten um Geld, Andy Rourke und Mick Joyce verlangten eine höhere Beteiligung an den Tantiemen, die hauptsächlich Morrissey und Marr zuflossen, die allerdings auch die allermeisten Songs der Band geschrieben hatten. Rourke begnügte sich mit einer Pauschalzahlung, Joyce kämpfte gerichtlich weiter, was bis heute ungeklärt ist.
Ich war von der Musik so begeistert, dass ich mir auch das Songbook zu „The World Won’t Listen“ gekauft und mich auf der Gitarre an den Songs versucht habe.

The Smiths, The World Won’t Listen, 1987 on Rough Trade
This is a compilation album—the second of three—including singles and b-sides from 1985-1987. Most of these tracks also appear on Louder Than Bombs (a 2xLP), but two are different versions and two are edits.
Fantastic collection of songs, including “Panic,” “Ask,” “Bigmouth Strikes Again,” “There Is a Light That Never Goes Out,” “That Joke Isn’t Funny Anymore,” and “You Just Haven’t Earned It Yet, Baby.”
What teenager hasn’t felt “And I’ve got no right to take my place in the human race . . . “?
My copy—via a record fair at Mill No. 5 in Lowell MA—is a UK issue from 1987, pressed by MPO. (Louder than Bombs was released in the US in lieu of this record, which was not released on vinyl in the US until the 2011 reissue series).

A snapshot from my vast and quiet memory palace. On the day that Desert Storm had begun, I got tired of chanting slogans in a town square, so I entered a record shop on the seaside town of Rimini and found "Yes, I am Blind" by Morrissey. Such happiness I remember, when I discovered it had been written by Andy Rourke.

Andy Rourke. Back in Indy he DJ'd and it was a grossly under attended gig. Regardless, he joined a handful of us our favorite dive bar after the gig. There were six of us in the entire place. We played pool. Got drunk. Danced around to music. Sent him to his hotel in a cab. It was a night I'll never forget.
His bass lines are full of bittersweet memories for me, but, that's the point of the Smiths.
May his memory be a blessing.

#AndyRourke was one of the best bass players of the 1980s IMHO. His playing was largely responsible for my getting into #TheSmiths. A very sad day, but an amazing legacy. RIP.

The Smiths - “Some Girls Are Bigger Than Others” (live at Brixton Academy, 1986)
This is my all-time favorite live Smiths performance. Johnny Marr is playing a gorgeous Mississippi John Hurt-style guitar line but it wouldn’t sound half as cool without Andy Rourke’s meaty bass. R.I.P.

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of #AndyRourke after a lengthy illness with pancreatic cancer.
Andy will be remembered as a kind and beautiful soul by those who knew him and as a supremely gifted musician by music fans.
We request privacy at this sad time -

RIP Andy Rourke.
Listening to The Smiths for the first time in a while and remembering just how incredible that music was when I first encountered it in the 1980s.
That You-Know-Who turned into a bigot shouldn't mean I can't enjoy music made by the band as a collective.
I know it's a complex discussion (and not one for a micro-blogging site) but I can't allow such a precious and formative part of my youth get stolen away by the latter-day nastiness of some wanker

The Smiths have (deservedly) been written about endlessly but relatively little has been written about how those amazing records owe their propulsion to a funk bassist hiding out in a jangly guitar pop band. Music writers are so focused on characters and biography they ignore the alchemy. The difference between great and blah are the so-called small details.
