  6. Just, wow. The Twilight Sad last night doing a stripped down set at Rough Trade for the release of It's the Long Goodbye.

(And because it's Rough Trade East on Brick Lane, I could also pick up some singara and sandesh ((Bengali snack and sweet respectively)) on the way home 😋)

  9. Really happy to have seen "Urlaub In Polen" perform live again for their new record earlier tonight:

    urlaubinpolen.bandcamp.com/alb

They had quite the influence on my music listening habits when I was young and disappeared for a decade or so.
What a blast from the past!

Make sure to catch them live if you can. 👌

  11. The Smiths, The World Won’t Listen, 1987 on Rough Trade

This is a compilation album—the second of three—including singles and b-sides from 1985-1987. Most of these tracks also appear on Louder Than Bombs (a 2xLP), but two are different versions and two are edits.

Fantastic collection of songs, including “Panic,” “Ask,” “Bigmouth Strikes Again,” “There Is a Light That Never Goes Out,” “That Joke Isn’t Funny Anymore,” and “You Just Haven’t Earned It Yet, Baby.”

What teenager hasn’t felt “And I’ve got no right to take my place in the human race . . . “?

My copy—via a record fair at Mill No. 5 in Lowell MA—is a UK issue from 1987, pressed by MPO. (Louder than Bombs was released in the US in lieu of this record, which was not released on vinyl in the US until the 2011 reissue series).

  12. The Smiths, Strangeways Here We Come, 1987 on Rough Trade.

Fourth (and final) studio album from The Smiths, produced by Stephen Street, Morrissey, and Johnny Marr and recorded at The Wool Hall in Beckington, Somerset. On constant repeat in my late 80s experience.

Strangeways was a prison in Manchester (now Manchester Prison) – The Smiths had previously used the Salford Lad’s Club for the cover of The Queen is Dead.

My copy—via A1 Records in NYC—is the 2009 Rhino reissue which sounds great (though I don’t have an 80s pressing to compare it to).

Panic Shack second time this year, promoting new album, and they played it cover to cover!

Coming hot after Torvill and Dean's Last Dance ⛸️ last week, you can't box me in 🥊. Both fabulous 😍

  17. Per the band's video description: “A specially recorded version of the Ivor Cutler song Women Of The World for #InternationalWomensDay. Originally released by #IvorCutler and #LindaHirst on #RoughTrade in the early eighties, the song is a feminist plea for women to assume power in an attempt to undo the damage done by patriarchal society before it's too late.” en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ivor_C

  19. RIP Kevan Staples. Growing up in North Bay in the late 1970s, I remember the first time I ever heard Rough Trade on the radio — it was "What's All the Furor About the Führer?" from Avoid Freud. To me, it was like hearing music from another planet (my first thought was "WTF is THIS?"), and it sent me into a punk/post-punk phase of my life that I've never left. I've lost track of the number of times I saw Rough Trade live (including their very last show) or Carole Pope solo (the latest being last fall in Stratford). With Kevan's passing, the world has become emptier. cbc.ca/news/canada/toronto/kev #RoughTrade #CanadianMusic

  21. @penworks
Think you’ve maybe understated the importance of this man’s influence on music of the time. Releasing music from a wide variety of independent artists, alongside getting airplay for his acts on John Peel’s show on Radio One, changed the landscape of music at the time. He triggered a sea change. Thanks Geoff. 👏🙏
