  2. “Now I will tell the captains of the ships, and all the ships together”*…

Ethan Mollick has created a new site that’s fascinating in two different ways. First and most overtly, it’s a beautiful (and thorough) visualization and explanation of the ships used by the protagonists of The Iliad.

But at the same time, it is a powerful demonstration of (at least one of) the ways that AI might be useful in scholarship and education: Mollick spun up the site last month, using Claude…

In the second book of the Iliad the poet pauses on the brink of the first battle, calls on the Muses, and counts the fleet: twenty-nine contingents, forty-six captains, some 178 place-names, 1,186 ships [and by Thucydides’ reckoning, around 100,000 men]. This site puts every entry on the map, rebuilds the ships from the archaeological evidence [pictured on this site], and lets you read the lines beside the ruins they describe…

    ###

As we set sail, we might recall that it was on this date in 331 BCE (long, long ago– but hundreds of years after the action described in The Iliad) that Alexander the Great and the Army of Macedon defeated King Darius III and his Persian Army in the Battle of Gaugamela, effectively the final blow to the Achaemenid Empire, resulting in its complete conquest by Alexander.

  3. Alexander the Great didn’t just admire legendary heroes—he modeled himself on them. From Achilles to Heracles, mythology helped shape his identity, his ambitions, and the image he created as he conquered an empire.

  4. Ancient Macedonian gymnasium linked to Alexander the Great reveals new finds in Greece

New excavations at the Royal Gymnasium of ancient Mieza in northern Greece are revealing more about education in Macedon during the 4th century BCE. The site near modern Naousa is linked by scholars to the place where Aristotle taught the young Alexander and other Macedonian royal heirs...

The same must not happen again with the current accession candidates from the #Balkans, and #Ukraine.

  7. Discover #medieval lions!

Following my last post on the Bodley Alexander (MS 264), Prof. McNamer (2026) suggests it was made for the young prince Lionel (meaning "Young Lion") of Antwerp (c. 1344).
Discover hidden lions woven into its folios:
Folio 65r: Look closely at the lion head on the saddle, as Alexander and #Bucephalus encounter dragons.
Folio 20v: Dozens of lion faces are embedded in the red sky.

  8. Alexander the Great in a glass diving bell, a puppet show, and a monk accompanied by a feline?

Recent scholarship suggests that the Bodley Alexander (MS 264) was made as a "picture book" for a young prince Lionel of Antwerp (1338–1368), son of Edward III and Philippa of Hainault.

  9. I saw a photo of a Greco-Buddhist sculpture. I didn't even know that #GrecoBuddhism was a thing. my boy #AlexanderTheGreat was behind it of course, founding cities in Asia left and right and bringing with him the idea that proper worship needs anthropomorphized art. and so the first Buddha statues looked like Greek gods, with curly hair, bedsheet for clothing and a contrapposto stance. #Gandhara

  10. ‘Can a conqueror remain a true student of virtue? Does political power inevitably corrupt the soul?’ greekreporter.com/2025/12/07/a

Clearly Trump is not. His soul has been corrupted and not just by embezzlement and undermining the independence of the executive, legislative and judiciary. To be fair he didn’t have or has anyone like Aristotle for his teacher. Neither is he like Alaxander the Great, a pupil who built an Empire. Therefore the facts support the truth that he must be the destroyer of an Empire. Most definitely he is not the leader, creator, financier or the worker of a Federation. #EmpireVsFederation #Philosophy #DialecticalInference #DialecticPrinciple #Aristotle #AlexanderTheGreat

  11. Just released a massive update for Arete that takes the number of scenarios from 8 to lucky 13! New scenarios are:

    •Haemus
    •Lyginus
    •Pelium
    •Arigaeum
    •Twins (a balanced Alex v Alex scenario for 2-players)

Not a DLC. Not an in-app purchase. If you own Arete on any platform just update and enjoy!
