Nur, OHNE dieses Modul ist das Schlagzeug nutzlos, ungefähr 6m² meines Studios sind mit Elektroschrott bedeckt und ich musste bereits Ersatz besorgen. -
I noticed that my #Alesis #Microverb4 effect processor was becoming quite noisy. I already changed some capacitors a few years ago, but today I proceeded to a complete recapping. The results are very good! The noise is once again very low and the sound quality is very good.

In the Assembly Manual under "Getting started" I find the following advice:
"watch tutorial videos".This is NOT HELPFUL at all!

I have a couple of tip top bits of early 90s music/studio kit for sale on eBay. Alesis Midiverb 4 (multi FX) and Alesis D4 (drum module). Both in excellent condition and fully working with new user memory backup batteries.

It’s somewhat annoying to try repeated repairs on these boards in that, if/when the parts burn, you then have to pull quite a lot of parts off the board to measure whether they’re good or not.
Surprisingly enough, the usual culprit in switch-mode PSUs, the low ESR caps on the output side, they seem intact. No bulges, even pulled off a few to check for capacitance.

Proceeded to remove all damaged parts from both the loudspeaker PSUs. Board 1 parts to the left, board 2 to the right. Marked one of the transistors that exploded on the photo, a general purpose NPN.
It seems the board design is of type that, upon one active component failing on the output side of PWM chip, a lot of related parts can burn up. This section circled on schematic photo.

Well, have decided to try my hand at creating music with #sequencing after rekindling my interest in #electronicmusic - bearing in mind the last time I used a sequencer it was an #Alesis MMT8 - and it was new!
This time it will all be #inthebox though. Cubase includes a simple but handy sequencer called Step Designer and I've installed the free VST plugin called #Stochas which has more advanced capabilities like 'probability' attribute per note and more... I may be 'asking the audience'.. soon!

So, I have purchased a nice #keytar Alesis Vortex Wireless 2. Now, there is an application to edit the presets for windows and mac, but it turns out that the mac application is too old for recent macOS versions. I can run the windows application in my mac laptop with #wine (I use #Codeweavers #CrossOver) but, as I'm not normal, I'm reversing the Windows application to write my own version.

purchased a used 1990ies #alesis #midiverb III for cheap. it's a reverb/delay with MIDI control. but it doesn't work, the "CLIP" LED is constantly lit.
found a service manual with a partial schematic online, so I started digging. turns out, the 12V pos and neg voltage rails are broken. the LM7812 and LM7912 both short their input, but they're protected through diodes that's why the 5V voltage rail is unaffected and the digital part still works.
To me this feels like a time travel to my childhood, where almost every electronics project started with a 7805. exactly never are they seen in today's devices anymore, due to their low efficiency and high thermal loss.
maybe I even fried the device myself, as I plugged it to a random 9V power supply with a fitting barrel jack I found. but it was AC, not DC...

I took the occasion to have a peek at the #firmware (version 1.02). I was surprised to found plenty of text inside. The unit does not have a display capable to show it, so the only thing I can think of is that the firmware was common with other #Alesis products of the time based on the #M4C chip and sporting a more capable display.

I use an #Alesis MicroVerb 4 as an effect module for the Protei. I bought it new in 1997 and I remember I loved it. When I put it back on track, I found it was quite noisy and the encoder was a pain. I found that changing capacitor C43 to 220uF vastly improved the situation (filtering Vdd for the analog part oft the ADC). I also changed the encoder with one that is not identical but I managed to adapt. Now it’s really a nice effect module! #reverb #repair #audio

Right now I have, in my possession, a #Roland #MKS50, a #Kawai #K4r and an #Ensoniq #ESQ1 (all synths, in case you don't know). I've got a #Tascam 414 (4-track cassette multitrack recorder), a #Yamaha #REX50 (effects unit, basically an SPX-90 with added distortion algorithms) and an #Alesis #Quadraverb (more effects). All I need is an SR-16 drum machine and I could make an album like it was 1990 again.

My first exposure to #RISC was in the #Alesis digital reverbs like the #MIDIverb and #Microverb. Suddenly, thanks to RISC, ordinary musicians like me could afford something as iteratively elephantine as a #DigitalReverb.
It was shocking.
