I have posted in the past on repairability and repair-hostile appliance design practices.
Let's integrate a couple of lines of thought:
Firstly, our planet's resources are finite.
Secondly, we're in late-stage exploitation capitalism.
Thirdly, we have a mature ecosystem of open source production.
Given that we should conserve resources and we're being forced to buy inferior appliances and we have the ability to stand up amazingly capable products (both software and hardware) using contributed effort, it's time for us to build open-source appliances.
I've talked about an open-source clothes washer before, and it's clear that refrigerators and dishwashers also need to go back to first principles.

Great work over at crowdsupply.com on an open source/repairable printer. An obviously useful device, simple and maintainable.
When you look at the design, you can see how hard incumbent printer manufacturers have been working at lock-in. Consider the many (many!) fights we've had over the years to get inkjets to be less predatory.

The smartphone I use right now was built in 2019, I bought it refurbished for less than 200€ in 2023, flashed it with an OS that still gives me software updates (thanks @e_mydata ), and now I replaced the battery with a repair kit for 22€ (thanks @iFixit ) so it's good as new again.
It runs all the apps I need. Why would I (or anyone) need anything else?

#PhotoOfTheDay since I am dwelling on post vise restoration, this was the early stage of mocking up several pieces I had to cut and work from one inch steel bar stock to fabricate replacement parts for a post vise. I needed a couple of wedges and an entire vise spring which is a U-shaped piece of mild steel.
I kept and re-used the mounting piece (top right) from my 1st post vise since I already had it fitted to my mounting location.

The ageing process leaves marks and character on our favourite things, and makes them worth fixing.
It has been a long time since I knew where to find an old-fashioned cobbler with the right tools for stitching thru thick leather, so when the strap of my handbag broke free, I re-attached the D Ring using an old scrap of leather (saved from when I worked in a factory at the beginning of the Industrial Revolution), a very sharp paring knife, and a bolt and two nuts left over from an old piece of broken furniture that someone took away.
The repair is now about 10 years old.

We've been saving the frozen dog food insulation for at least a year and I finally figured out what to do with it.
The roof of the wood shed has a lot of condensation when it's cold out, enough to drip down quite a bit of water. I'm hoping that insulating the underside with this stuff will prevent that. But ... I think it's made of corn starch or something like that so not sure how long it will last. We shall find out!

Am Ende schweißten wir dann doch wieder Stahl. Unsere Neulinge müssen auch erstmal lernen, Meister zu werden.
Aber das ist nicht schwer. Irgendwann entwickelt man das Gefühl fürs Schweißen und dann wird es nur noch besser 😂

Weil uns Edelstahl als Schwierigkeitlevel nicht gereicht hat, schweißten wir dann einen Frontgepäckträger aus Aluminium.
Das Teil hier gibt es allerdings nicht mehr nachzukaufen und der Radladen wollte es nicht schweißen. 🤷♀️

Als Erstes haben wir einen Lampenhalter geschweißt. Für 3,50 Euro hätte man einfach einen neuen kaufen können. Aber die Schraube musste ja eh dran.
Edelstahl ist allerdings kein Anfängermaterial und Erfahrung ist extrem hilfreich.

Kid introduced sunglasses to car door. Repairing plastic is pretty tricksy but straightening these microscopic screws is also going to be a challenge.
If only I could fish through the bin at the returns department of these models.
