I took the older nephew to the downtown Denver skate park this morning. Took the train down, skated through downtown to the park. This very sheltered young man was confronted with a pretty rough looking group of local skaters, almost all adults. I just hung around and kept my eye on him. It was cool to watch him navigate the interactions. By the end of the session he had been given advise and encouragement by 4-5 different skaters. Watching him learn that appearances can be deceiving was priceless.

The problem in US politics is that people are trying to sell intellectually dishonest debate, racism, and financial fraud as the cultural equivalent of skateboarding, punk music, and sexual education.

✮ First Game ✮
“I used to be an adventurer like you, then I took an arrow in the knee.” —Guard (The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim)
What was your first ever videogame?
Our folks weren’t fond of video games, so my siblings and I were content listening to the gaming stories of our friends. That was true until Melo, my brother, sold his skateboard, and when he asked me what we should do we the money, I asked him if he would consider buying a game console, and would you believe it? He did.
I have something aside myself so we pooled our money together and bought our first family computer. The shop owner took pity on us , so be threw in some used games of his. Being Mario was the first handed to us, I would say that was our first video game.
We jumped right into setting up the family computer when we got home, it took us an hour to set it up. I pressed the cartridge into the port of the console. A click. Our little screen blinked awake. Super Mario Bros. 1 player game or 2 player game. Of course, two. Then, the epic game music we’ve all come to love. I pressed the directional button. Mario ran. The rest was history.
The same is true for our second game console, I was a senior in high-school when Dad brought a Nintendo 64 home. Mario 64 was our first game in that console followed by The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. For the duration of that one summer before university, my siblings and I bonded over those video games.
As a Gen-Xer, I can proudly say that I had the best of both worlds. Playing outdoors and inside a screen.
