Do you think it is unreasonable that your fundamental right to safe shelter is not taken into account? Are you angry because speculators are taking advantage of the housing shortage and the government is just pretending that it doesn't care? Despite the fact that squatting is forbidden in the Netherlands, it still continues. For people who actively act for the right to housing, mutual aid is self-evident. Given the reason for squatting, namely the social problem of housing shortage, squatters generally act as a kind of union.
When preparing a squatting action, during the squatting action itself and when you are inside the squat, there is always advice and support from other squatters. People are happy to stand by you almost unconditionally, but you have to take the initiative yourself and you have to make the final choices yourself. In practice, this means that you have to know how to find an empty house yourself, find out for yourself why and how long it has been vacant, put together your own group and ultimately live there yourself. Of course, you can count on practical help as long as you make a clear plan and coordinate its implementation.

modal sounds from the Eastern Mediterranean, the Balkans & beyond
Monthly orchestra meeting in Joe's Garage, Amsterdam, where we explore the music of rebetiko, Balkan folk, Turkish makam, and other modal traditions from the East. All levels and instruments are welcome - the final repertoire will be decided according to the team. Reading music sheet is not necessary.
Organised, coordinated and musically directed by Yvonne Melissa (violin, voice, viola, oud).
NOTE: This will be a self study session, Yvonne will not attend the session. This will be the last session/rehearsal before our concert on June 14.

SolidarityLine Croatia (SLC) is a distress hotline for people on the move, supporting those within Croatian territory. The aim of SLC is to assist those in physical danger—whether injured, facing health issues, stranded in forests, freezing, or drowning—as well as those at risk of pushbacks, in need of asylum access, detained, or missing.
SLC supports also people and relatives that are looking for they loved ones that are desappeared on the route. In many cases familis contact SLC after loosing the contact with their brothers, nephews, relatives that were crossing the border. SLC in doing this collaborates with 4D. 4D is a migrant justice database operating since many years and focused on documenting human losses that occur on the so-called Balkan Route.
Since May 1st 2026 until today, at least 13 people have died in Croatian territory and along the border with Bosnia and Herzegovina and Slovenia. 13 people in 10 days, in different moments and under different circumstances. The money raised with this people's kitchen will not go to the SLC, but rather to the costs of a funeral or repatriation of a recent victim of the border regime.

Drijfand tells the story of the foating gardens created by the renowned artist Robert Jasper Grootveld in Amsterdam’s Entrepot harbor, Zeeburg district. Beginning in late 1999, I started to flm the construction of these unique garden islands in Grootveld’s workshop, a visionary project he had nurtured since the 1960s. Within a few months two foating garden were completed. Through intimate footage, we witness the creative process unfold, as well as the sudden collapse of the project. amid escalating tensions between Grootveld and local authorities. Until his passing in 2009, I flmed regularly. Among the moments captured were times when he was recognized for his role in bringing global attention to Amsterdam, as well as his involvement as one of the founders of the Provo movement in the 1960s. In 2024, drawn by the gardens’ abundant nature and the dedication of the Raft Builders of Amsterdam, who maintain the islands in Grootveld’s pioneering spirit, I returned to document this living legacy. The islands’ buoyancy relies on styrofoam, a material Grootveld championed for its “power of softness.” Yet, 25 years later, styrofoam’s environmental impact has sparked urgent questions. The flm delves into this dilemma, tracing the search for sustainable, biobased alternatives that honor Grootveld’s ethos while protecting nature. Drijfand offers a candid, tender, and often hilarious glimpse into Amsterdam’s underground creative forces, a story of resilience, innovation, and the evolving relationship between art, nature, and community. This is a weekly open practice session of east Mediterranean music, in which we play genres such as rebetiko and Greek/Balkan/Turkish/Middle Eastern folk music. Together we explore the melodic pathways, rhythms (e.g. 9/8, 7/8. 5/4) and harmonies of, as well as connections between these musical traditions. We gather to have fun playing music together, to share musical knowledge and experience, and improve our skills on our instruments. We welcome interested newcomers to join in, regardless of musical experience, and using any kind of instrument (strings, percussion, wind, voice). We have to be mindful of the neighbours and predominantly play acoustically, or in case of electric instruments, at very low volume.
