My 10¢ as a historian of Indigenous-settler relations: Kinew's statement is a radical challenge to the status quo. Abolishing the Indian Act would be a profound shift in Canadian politics. It's a piece of legislation that, while nearly universally disliked if not despised, has long seemed wholly impervious to repeal. While it didn't create modern First Nations activism like some historians used to argue, the last attempt to do away with it - the 1969 White Paper from the government of Trudeau père - certainly gave activists a platform that was far more durable and visible to settler society than anything they'd had before.
