If you use the pygments syntax highlighter (for example in your documentation), and you have examples that produce output (for example from the shell or Python REPL), here is a tip that I just discovered: look for the "console session" version of your language on this page: https://pygments.org/languages/
It keeps the language's syntactic coloring while dealing correctly with the prompt and output. Also when you copy the code, it will avoid copying the prompt. -

I am moving all my computing libraries to #xarray, no regrets. It is a natural way to manipulate datasets of rectangular arrays, with named coordinates and dimensions: https://xarray.dev/
There are several possible backends, including #dask which allows lazy data loading.
I had the pleasure of meeting some of the devs last week, who showed me a preview of the upcoming `DataTree` structure which is going to make this library even more versatile! -
European Citizens' Initiative to make safe and accessible abortion available to all in Europe:
https://eci.ec.europa.eu/044/public/#/screen/home
It needs to reach 1 million signatures and 7 member state thresholds. We are still far from that, so please sign *now* if you can (European citizens only) and share widely (everybody)!
Let's do this already, come on it's 2024…

I would have never guessed that SciPy has graph algorithms but the `scipy.sparse.csgraph` module is full of them (connected components, Dijkstra, max flow, etc.): https://docs.scipy.org/doc/scipy/reference/sparse.csgraph.html#module-scipy.sparse.csgraph

I have always wondered if computers would still beat humanity at chess if they had to run on 20 Watts (that's what the brain consumes). It seems a fairer playing ground than sitting across a TPU array. How many Raspberry Pis does Stockfish need to beat Magnus Carlsen?

Tomorrow at #MITMuseum #Boston : https://mitmuseum.mit.edu/programs/mit-museum-after-dark
> At this month’s After Dark we’re teaming up with mathematicians and engineers to explore the art of the fold. Collaborate on large scale #origami models, create Japanese kusudama out of wooden tiles, participate in a LARP protein folding activity, AND learn to fold dumplings!
> Talks by master folders Erik Demaine, Martin Demaine, and Alfonso Parra Rubio. Tasty dumplings from Mei Mei and local brews from Remnant available for purchase. -

I have never seen such a concise and clear explanation of the main concepts of game programming (by the single author of Viridithas, a top-20 chess engine): https://github.com/cosmobobak/viridithas/blob/master/wiki.md

CW: food (dessert)
I made my first "bûche de Noël" (Yule log) for the lab's holiday party. I didn't think I liked those: I usually find them too heavy and too chocolatey. But I was really happy with this recipe involving fresh orange slices and very little chocolate! Even the biscuit is light, being mostly meringue.

CW: food (vegan)
I started cooking my 18-month homemade sauerkraut :) I never kept one for so long, so I am very curious about the result! It already looks and tastes great. It's cooking in watered-down Riesling, as is usually done. I fermented it with cumin, I don't think that this is traditional but I thought I might like it, and I wasn't sure where to find juniper berries around here.

CW: food
I made it for the lab but the bottom was too soggy and I couldn't resolve myself to bring my coworkers an inferior apple pie. So I am having it entirely to myself... Not that I am complaining!
I will make it again next week and cook the dough separately, which should fix the issue. It is a cinnamon-flavored shortcrust pastry, with a bed of almond flour, a layer of apple sauce with some raisins, and a top of thin apple slices. And a pretty flower 🌹
