📘 "The Door" by Magda Szabó, translated from Hungarian into English by Len Rix
I read this slowly over the course of a couple of weeks, savoring it. But then I reached the 70% mark. I finished the rest in a day, unable to look away, but also not wanting to see, so I read it with one hand on my ereader and the other hand half covering my eyes.
This is a bizarre novel about a woman writer, one half of a couple needing a housekeeper while they work their jobs. Enter Emerence, everyone's recommended help, an old lady from the countryside. Mysterious, stand-offish, capable. You don't interview Emerence. Emerence interviews you.
As Emerence starts working for the protagonist, the two develop a... relationship. Friendship? Difficult bond? You decide. Over the span of years and many pages we learn the tiniest things about Emerence. She is horrible, but she is great. Somehow she is both mentally unwell and the sanest person around. I dislike her, but I'd also like her around. Maybe. I'm not sure. But why is nobody allowed past her door?
This was such a good book with a fantastic focus on the characters. Truly unique. It made me think a lot about relationships with people who are very different from you -whether it's possible, or even healthy, to keep them up despite harm done. I used to be friends with a variety of people in the past, it seemed only natural. But now, with political tensions so very high and personal boundaries so often violated, not so much anymore. It leads to mixed feelings. Ideally in my utopic mind we'd all disagree but still get along and if it really comes down to it, be there for each other anyway, no matter what. In daily life things never work out that way.
I think this book taps into that doubt. I still don't know if the protagonist and Emerence should have been in each other's lives for 20+ years. But I'm also somehow glad they were. I think that's what good books make you feel: mixed feelings about grey areas, with lots of pondering about your own surroundings.
Anyway, a very big recommend stamp for if you're in the mood for a slow book solely focused on flawed characters trying their supposed best from their limited perspectives.
