Hiking around the west end of the White Rock Canyon Rim trail this morning, scouting trail conditions to see if it's bikeable yet (it's not, still too muddy), we followed a spur trail to discover this delightful mini Fossil Falls, which somehow we'd never seen before. The water sculpts the basalt into smooth graceful curves before plunging off the edge of the falls.

  4. I was very pleased that I made it up to the top of Cerro Grande. A few months ago, it would have been out of the question, but now I'm on some meds that are helping a lot. The doctors are still mystified as to what's actually wrong with my heart and what that means for the long term, but at least I can hike and hike while they figure it out.

    Also: lots of bugling. I couldn't find the sound recorder app on my phone, so I used Merlin to record a few clips.

  5. Today's hiking group destination was Deception Peak, elevation 12,320'. I am, sadly, not up to a climb like that right now, so here's a photo from 2020.

  7. D and I flew a short combat session at the flying field today,. We had one solid contact, which I won -- he immediately glided his combat wing back to the ground while I was still flying. When I brought mine in for a landing, I saw why he'd come in: half his prop was embedded in the nose of my plane.

    No other damage done -- he replaced the prop and we finished the session later (with no more hits).

  17. We're having big mourning dove flocks this spring, though not many other birds. The other day I was counting doves as they suddenly all startled and flew away. That's not unusual -- doves are the biggest cowards, EVERYTHING frightens them -- but this time they had a good reason, as the local Cooper's hawk promptly landed on the fence overlooking the feeding area, and obligingly stayed there long enough for me to grab the camera.
