I made a canard using my 3D pen on tissue paper technique. Canards have a small foreplane instead of a tailplane. The main wing is at the far back with a vertical stabilizer at the end. The foreplane is great for trimming the flight. It is a bit easier to trim since the center of mass is between the two wings. A regular wing configuration needs nose weight for a propper flight.

I made another prototype using the 3D-pen + tissue paper technique. The Otto Lilienthal "Normalgleiter" turned out quite good. It does glide OK which is good enough to demonstrate the first flight experiments to kids.

1/2: My 3D pen wingstructures are really fun to prototype different airplane setups. Here is a quick biplane test. Definitely flies better than the single wing setup. I'd love to try the wright flyer next, using a canard setup and a drone motor + supercap. See 2/2 for a flight test!

Stayed up late prepping gear to spend the day tomorrow, with my dad, at an event for our lifelong shared hobby (r/c planes). Now I’m wiped out but will still have to get up to actually enjoy the day. 😅😅 (Stayed up late to finish what I hope will be an awesome surprise! 😅😅) #RCplanes

My paper planes made from tissue paper and a 3D-pen structure are improving. Now I can slide nose weight and wing along a balsa wood stick to trimm the plane correctly. For nose weight I use spacers/screws I had left over from a PC dissassembly. They are perfect because they can stack endlessly.
The 3D printed connectors make it possible to disassemble the plane. That is important to store or carry the planes.#RCplanes #stemeducation #paperplanes #mint #3dprinting #makerspace

I am prototyping paper airplanes usinge the idea of 3D-printing directly to thin paper and then cutting the parts for assembly.
I also tried using a 3D-pen. Both ways work and the planes fly pretty well. Next up: bigger plane + supercap-motor unit.The idea is inspired by a recent video of Tom Stanton.

D and I flew a short combat session at the flying field today,. We had one solid contact, which I won -- he immediately glided his combat wing back to the ground while I was still flying. When I brought mine in for a landing, I saw why he'd come in: half his prop was embedded in the nose of my plane.
No other damage done -- he replaced the prop and we finished the session later (with no more hits).

RC Airplanes are a wonderful and relaxing (depending on your craft, lol) hobby.
And it's also quite affordable with ready-to-go starter kits for just over $100.But if you want to join an RC club to get access to an actual flying field, you have to shell out $50-$85 per year for the AMA (Academy of Model Aeronautics) membership in the US, and an additional $100 per year for most flying fields.
I mean, if you're serious about your hobby (any hobby), that might indeed be chump-change to you, but it's really not a trivial amount of money at all.

This dog enclosure had such a nice folding frame I was loathe to see it wasted when the zippers died, so I have repurposed as a transport frame for my planes, should stop them getting as damaged when going flying. I also need to build a storage frame to get them off the floor and maybe get the car in the garage one day #rcplanes #rcflying #rchobbies
