How much should it cost an organisation for an employee to claim £15 petty cash for tea and coffee for a meeting? Here's a real-life example of how this process works in a UK government organisation:
① Fill in a paper form to claim the £15.
② Get your manager's approval signature.
③ Get your director's approval signature.
④ Take the form to petty cash person.

That article by Adrian Cockcroft had many insights. Building a quick version to get started, and then adapting to new needs, both make total sense.

If people are saying "Amazon got it wrong" then they have the wrong idea about and design. We know it's not like a skyscraper where you design it once!

From what I can see, the Prime Video team ran into integrators and adapted accordingly.

  3. avoid mixing levels of abstraction.

But can you take this too far? Absolutely. It is usually adequate to split a high-level criterion into no more than 3-4 lower-level criteria, but as usual it depends on the scope and complexity of your ADR.

Be careful though, some of these constraints can be sensitive topics, such as having to follow a company master solution, or that the team does not have the skills to implement an option. Keep your ADR impartial. You should assume anybody in your organisation could read it.

  8. Can we use bi-directional arrows in diagrams? 🤔 This was a great question I had after my talk at

When you try to label a bi-directional line (because you are labeling it, aren't you) you will likely struggle to write something concise. Instead, create 2 uni-directional arrows and label each. This is much easier to understand.

    Here are my slides: jacquiread.com/files/2024-05-1

  9. @comocamp may be over, but dates have been announced for 2024! May 6-8th 🥳

    - "incredibly friendly and helpful community"
    - "exchanging ideas with so many people with different experiences"
    - "in-depth discussions with really knowledgeable people"
    - "I always learned something new, no matter the topic"

  10. at : here is a simulation of what some people with see when you use coloured for
Some of the colours are the same or very similar. See the third image for a set of stickies where the colours are distinguishable or the shape/size is different. You can also use symbols, or cut the sticky like @Steve_Read

1 in 12 men and 1 is 20 women have colour vision deficiency so you cannot rely on colour alone to communicate.

  12. Thank you for the insightful questions I received after my talk at Devoxx Greece! One question was how to stop knowledge sprawling through communication channels. My big tip: always 𝚜̲𝚑̲𝚊̲𝚛̲𝚎̲ ̲𝚊̲ ̲𝚕̲𝚒̲𝚗̲𝚔̲ to the answer when people ask a question. This makes the answers accessible and searchable by all, and encourages everyone to create documentation and maintain it!

  17. ④ Sowmya Sridharamurthy says we should be curious and asking questions as technical professionals, and I totally agree! Thinking about things critically and systematically, and just asking 'why' improves our software and our other work.

  18. ③ Something that @simonbrown and I both agree on when it comes to diagrams: a common set of abstractions is more important than a common notation. Consider two maps of the same area. They have common abstractions like a road and a river, but those things might look different on each map. There is a key.

  20. Here are some of my key takeaways from a captivating Greece 2024:

① We need to stop thinking about user-centric design and start to think about life-centric design. The creation of a utopia means enacting someone else's dystopia. Inclusivity, care, and working together are the way forward. Interdependence over independence. Thank you Monika Bielskyte for your inciteful keynote.
