I also derived a new elevation model from the aerial images, allowing me to visualize the elevation change in the affected areas.
The rocks and debris in the valley are locally up to 32m thick and I estimate the total displaced volume is about 11 million cubic meters.

Last Wednesday the Birchgletscher in the Swiss Alps collapsed, devastating large parts of the village #Blatten and blocking the Lonza river which created a small lake which destroyed even more houses.
Thanks to aerial images shared by #swisstopo, I was able to create a 3D model of the area.
You can explore it here 👉 https://skfb.ly/pxHLC

If you're attending the conference, you can find my iPoster for some more interactive goodness and I'd be happy to see you during the virtual poster session on Wednesday!
Otherwise you can already read more about this project in my #LPSC2025 abstract: https://www.hou.usra.edu/meetings/lpsc2025/pdf/2074.pdf

With #LPSC2025 about to start, it's time to share what I've been working on during the last months.
This is a new high resolution 3D model of the Mont Mercou outcrop, that I made during my recent internship at LPG Nantes. 🧵#Mars #NASA #Curiosity #MSL #planetaryscience #photogrammetry

Since the capture time of the image wasn't published, I tried matching the Earth terminator and cloud patterns.
This area above the pacific ocean seems like a good match.
The approximate capture is Mar 7, 2:00 UTC. #IM2Note that we are seeing the Earth "upside down" here and the North pole is slightly tilted towards us.
Alternative view via @zoom_earth: https://zoom.earth/maps/satellite/#view=23,-141.3,4z/date=2025-03-07,02:00/overlays=labels:off,lines:off -
Since the #IM2 lander uses very wide angle fisheye lenses, I was able to make a partial 360° panorama from the image.
This gives a slightly better sense of scale and direction. -
Another one bites the (Moon)dust!
This is Intuitive Machines' #IM2 lander that once again toppled over after trying to land on Mons Mouton near the lunar south pole.
The picture had lots of detail hidden in the shadows which I brought out in processing.

Here is specimen of #Chlamydomonas , small unicellular green algae with two flagella. When I saw it it was just spinning around like crazy. Only in this 8x slow motion video the flagella became visible.
-
Next up is a #Ciliate. These one-celled organisms are covered in small hairs that they use to move around.
Also, this thing was zooming, I had a hard time to keep up with it! -
Once my camera adapter had arrived I went to collect some dirty water from a puddle. It's winter here, so it was frozen over, but even then, there was an absolute huge amount of life in there.
All following posts came from the same sample.First off is a #Rotifer digging through some decomposing algae.

So a few weeks ago, a relative of mine was looking for a new home for his old ZEISS research microscope.
And while I'm not a biologist - I'm a pretty big optics and photography nerd so I obviously couldn't decline the offer.Let me take you onto a little journey to the #microcosmos 🧵

Two years ago, NASA's Curiosity Mars rover captured this feathery iridescent cloud after sunset. The color is created by diffraction effects when sunlight is scattered by small CO2 particles in the cloud.

The Perseverance rover captured some pretty massive dust devils earlier today. That large one in the foreground was at least 300m high.
EDIT: corrected height estimate from 500 to 300m.

What a beauty! This is comet C/2024 G3 (ATLAS) passing through the field of view of the LASCO C3 coronagraph.
It wasn't for certain whether it would survive it's closest approach to the sun on January 13th, but it did and delivered us a spectacular show!
