  1. Is this Type 2 Polar stratospheric #clouds called #nacreous on the #tweed #coast a couple of days ago or type 1 Polar Stratospheric clouds? Destructive droplets of nitric &/or sulphuric acid clouds - milder colours - photo seemed dull to the eyes - out the car window #photography #climate #science

  2. Special stratospheric clouds today. It's nearly midday on Dec 25 and there's no sun here for another few weeks, but we do get these funky clouds that are very high up in the atmosphere which catch the sun from over the horizon.

They often turn a rainbow of pearlescent colours, but mostly today they've been leaning into the Trans colours... because Trans rights are human rights :)

    Iridescent vs nacreous clouds:

#Nacreous clouds, also known as polar stratospheric clouds, form at high altitudes in the stratosphere and are known for their vivid colors, especially during twilight. #Iridescent clouds, or irisation, can occur in various types of clouds at lower altitudes and display pastel colors due to the diffraction of light through small water droplets or ice crystals.

  8. This pic from last night show some clouds very similar to nacreous clouds (above the dark cloud band in the pic). This is about 20 minutes after sunset. Normally #nacreous #clouds form at high latitudes, but this is from Cartagena, Colombia, at only 10.4º latitude North. Any expert around knows if this is possible? 🤔

  12. Two years ago, NASA's Curiosity Mars rover captured this feathery iridescent cloud after sunset. The color is created by diffraction effects when sunlight is scattered by small CO2 particles in the cloud.

  14. Early January in Tromsø is a great time to catch some Nacreous Clouds. We saw a heap of these over the course of a week. They don't photograph very well though, as a lack of structure/texture is their nature.

These kinds of clouds are caused by sunlight over the horizon hitting high altitude clouds.

  18. 24/12/2023 - The wind was getting up by evening so we decided on a sunny day walk instead. Bus out and then a slow walk back. The rivers were high from snow melt. Two stone circles on the way, one I'd never been to before. Both looked lovely in the winter sunshine. Just after sunset as we neared home, the last half hour was spent looking at some wonderful nacreous clouds.

  20. Nacreous clouds again today, even better than the ones earlier in the week!! Absolutely stunning but also quite apocalyptic too. #Nacreous #NacreousClouds #CloudAppreciationSociety

  22. Not every day that I cycle out of Waverley station and see the #stratosphere lit up in the dawn sky. Not as big a display of #nacreous clouds as 2016 (blogs.ed.ac.uk/hughpumphrey/20 clouds/…). It faded quickly as I rode to work and was gone by I reached Kings Buildings.

  23. Tweaked photo of the #nacreous #clouds visible this morning in #Scotland. Unusual to see them this far south, they're probably rarer than the northern lights.
