  1. Next up is a . These one-celled organisms are covered in small hairs that they use to move around.
Also, this thing was zooming, I had a hard time to keep up with it!

  7. Scientists identify 2022 sea urchin killer usf.edu/marine-science/news/20

A scuticociliate causes mass mortality of #Diadema antillarum in the #Caribbean Sea science.org/doi/10.1126/sciadv by @virome_girl

"After identifying the #ciliate using genomic techniques, the team grew it in the lab and performed infection experiments... When it was introduced to healthy #urchins in an aquarium tank, the urchins died within a few days – just as they did in the ocean. That sealed the deal for confirming the killer."

  12. We spent most of 2022 hunting down a sea urchin killer - and the results are published in Science Advances today - check out this story (with lots of great photos) by #USFCMS - usf.edu/marine-science/news/20 summarizing the work. #urchin #Diadema #disease #ocean #marine #oceanography #ciliate #protist #ecology #research #science #invertebrate #microscopy 🧵

  17. Oooo, have I found something new (for me)? Looks like a ciliate called a Tintinnid. Not the whole thing, just the lorica, in which the cell lives. I’m thinking Favella sp. What do you think?

  18. @booktrust My wife's book 'Blakes Small Adventure' is all about a tiny creature living on a salt marsh dreaming of friends to play with. He gets swept up by the tide on a hair-raising adventure! Will he ever return to his little pond? Will he find friends? 19. The potato chip and the bean. A couple of marine ciliates from my saltmarsh creek sample yesterday. There’s not much free info out there in marine ciliates, so if anyone can shed some light on them, let me know!

  20. I don’t actually see that many ciliates in my samples but this one was quite a treat! This is Condylostoma sp. and I love how it looks like a little scoop!
