  1. Being a translator means constantly having to turn yourself into an "instant expert" on some new task or subject.

I've been translating some excellent stage plays into English lately for a performing arts foundation that promotes plays developed in their region. Now I'm trying to figure out exactly how one markets scripts to English-language theater companies. 😀

On the Korean series SQUID GAME, released today in 2021, we learn that the murderous games exist to entertain amoral zillionaires, embodied in a creepy, sexually predatory old white American gay man who says things like "If you can satisfy me in 5 min., I'll change your life."

The equation between same-sex desire, violence, and sexual predation - so common on US television in the 1970s - is still sadly alive on Korean TV.

  3. #Translators: I'm thinking of switching from MemoQ to the newer CAT app #CafeTran, because I'd rather use my Linux laptop as my main work computer.

Have any of you made that switch? If so, do you feel you have similar functionality and agility in CafeTran? Or do you find yourself missing major features from MemoQ?

TALES OF THE CITY - 6/7/2019, Netflix

A more diverse cast and writing team brought to life this long-awaited continuation of the 1993-2001 set of limited-run TV series based on Armistead Maupin's novels. Maupin's stories dealt with a mix of gay, lesbian, bi, trans, straight and cis characters who formed a family of choice while living in a house in San Francisco.

In the revival, whose plot was original to the Netflix series, all new trans roles were cast with trans or enby actors and there was greater racial diversity than in the earlier TV incarnations.

    P.O.V.: "Tongues Untied" - 7/16/1991, PBS

Marlin Riggs' acclaimed 1989 film mixes conventions of performance art, poetry and documentary to explore lives of Black gay men in a society that seeks to silence and marginalize both of those identities.

The 1991 broadcast of TONGUES UNTIED became a centerpiece of right-wing attempts to defund PBS in the 1990s.

Many PBS stations ran disclaimers before the show (like the one seen at the start of this clip, from WHYY-TV in Philadelphia), and some refused to air the film at all.

HBO COMEDY HALF HOUR - 7/14/1994, HBO

Two great stand-up comics, Bob Smith and Suzanne Westenhoefer, starred in HBO's first two comedy specials headlined by gay performers doing gay material. Their specials aired back to back on the same night, two weeks after the Stonewall 25 celebrations.

These were HBO's first queer stand-up specials but not commercial cable's first. For instance, the Ha! network (a predecessor of Comedy Central) ran a Frank Maya special in August 1990, and Comedy Central ran its first OUT THERE special in December 1993.

    NORTHERN EXPOSURE - 7/12/1990, CBS

Premiere of this brilliantly quirky drama series set in Cicely, Alaska. The episode includes the first of many references to the town's being founded long ago by a devoted, loving female couple: Cicely and Roslyn.

The next year, a flashback episode of NORTHERN EXPOSURE would focus on Cicely and Roslyn's story.

    CUTTERS - 7/9/1993, CBS

One of the first American TV series to feature a black gay regular role was this short-lived sitcom set in a combination barbershop/beauty salon. Julius Carrey plays the supporting role of Troy King, an Olympic track gold medalist turned hair stylist.

Judging from this episode, Troy was mainly there as a sounding board for (and occasional resolver of) the leads' heterosexual problems. This was typical of TV's handling of queer regulars at the time. Episode guides list no episodes that gave him his own plots. CUTTERS was produced in 1992, but CBS executives were unimpressed and decided to shelve it and burn it off in the summer.

Hung out yesterday in Seattle with queer TV historian extraordinaire Matt Baume, author of the new book HI HONEY, I'M HOMO, an entertaining, well-researched history of queer characters on American sitcoms and TV specials. He's a nice, smart guy who is clearly enthusiastic about his subject matter. Check out Matt's videos on YouTube.

At the coffee shop, he showed me his dog-eared, heavily annotated copy of my own book, Alternate Channels, which was awfully sweet of him.
