    Ed was such a great character, played perfectly by Darrin Burrows.

    Joel: "Have you ever seen anyone with such animal magnetism with women?"
    Ed: "James Bond."
    Joel: "That's the movies, Ed. Try reality."
    Ed: "No, thanks."

  6. #IndigenousActor #ElaineMiles says #ICE called her #TribalID ‘fake’

    By Kai Uyehara, Nov. 27, 2025 at 6:00 am Updated Nov. 28, 2025 at 6:12 pm

    "Elaine Miles was walking to a bus stop in Redmond to go to Target, she said, when four men wearing masks and vests with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement label stepped out of two black SUVs with no front plates and pressed her for her ID.

    "Miles, an Indigenous actor best known for her roles in '#NorthernExposure,' '#SmokeSignals,' '#Wyvern' and '#TheLast OfUs,' handed them her tribal ID from the #ConfederatedTribesOfTheUmatilla Indian Reservation in #Oregon.

    "Federal government agencies recognize tribal ID as a valid form of identification, and Miles has used it to travel back and forth to Canada and Mexico without any issues.

    "Yet, Miles recalled one agent calling it 'fake.'

    " 'Anyone can make that,' she recalled another agent saying.

    "Reported encounters between immigration agents and Indigenous people like Miles’ remain rare [BULLSHIT!]. But as immigration enforcement has gotten more aggressive, including in the Seattle area, incidents like Miles’ are stoking fears beyond immigrant communities.

    "Miles said her son and uncle were both detained by ICE agents who initially did not accept their tribal IDs before they were eventually let go.

    " 'What we’re talking about here is #RacialProfiling,' said Seattle-based Indigenous rights attorney Gabriel Galanda, who does not represent Miles. 'People are getting pulled over or detained on the street because of the dark color of their skin.' "

  11. I have rewatched a few episodes of #NorthernExposure… feels like a comfy worn-in pair of ugg boots

  12. ‘It explored the spectrum of humanity’: the enduring pleasures of Northern Exposure

    The quirky early 90s drama ran for 110 episodes, had fans in Joni Mitchell and Bon Iver, and showed one of TV’s first gay weddings. Now, having been forgotten for years, its warm-hearted charms are being discovered by a new generation

  13. Here’s some Truth you Olds may not grok. Northern Exposure, one of the best shows ever, was produced by
    David Chase, The Sopranos Mensch.

  14. Today was episode 5 of Season 1 of Northern Exposure. Russian Flu. We meet Joel's fiancee as she flies in for the weekend. There were three songs I think and they all appear to be originals. At some point I'll need to really dig into it to be sure, as the credits don't list the music at the end.

  15. Have watched Episodes 3, 4 and 5 of Season 1. That finishes Disc 1.

  16. Season 1 Episode 2, of Northern Exposure. I think we've met all the main characters, except for Shelly.

  17. I'd like to put my Northern Exposure notes on my website, but I don't want to spend a lot of time setting up a CMS ( I say this but I also need to get my Drupal install I have locally out there as well ) so I am looking for Static website generators. Played with one based on Rust called Cobalt last night and....I thought I had a workflow down but the it went lopsided.

  18. Started a rewatch of Northern Exposure. Tonight was just the Pilot. I took some notes in a a notebook. Even all these years later I still know the character names pretty much on sight.

  20. I'm just going to make this (see above) a whole thread of things I'm gonna put on DropBox in case anyone else wants 'em. I know some of you are packrats like me. :)

    Like some kind of weird Fedi garage sale, where everything is free.

    Northern Exposure fans, here's some wallpapers from 2003. There are 16 images, total of 2MB.

  21. I really need to pull the trigger on the region 2 DVD of Northern Exposure. Why region 2? Supposedly has all the original music as aired.

  22. #OldTVShows #TV

    I've been binge watching the old TV show #NorthernExposure recently and until now I really didn't understand the appeal of it when it 1st aired in the 90's, apart from the fact that I thought that the character, #MaggieOConnell played by #JanineTurner was really HOT but I think I get it now . . .

    It's a character driven show & the viewers connect & identify with the flawed, conflicted, neurotic & self-obsessed personalities of the characters, who they so so much in themselves & others.

    At least that's why I'm enjoying watching it in its entirety for the 1s time now.

  23. I'm considering rewatching Northern Exposure neodb.social/tv/season/1nW2pCC, which I loved when I was a barely a teen and haven't watched since. Does it hold up nowadays?

    I'd rather leave it in the past as a good memory than rewatching and being disappointed today.

  25. “Beautiful Snow” by John Whittaker Watson

    John Whittaker Watson was a 19th century poet and journalist from New York. The author of many serials, poems and short stories published in various magazines, today he is probably best known for his poem “Beautiful Snow.” It is found in the collection of poems by the same title, published in Philadelphia in 1871.

    An illustration from the 1871 edition of “Beautiful Snow; and Other Poems”

    I first heard of this poem in an episode of my all-time favourite TV shows from the 1990s, Northern Exposure. I’m sure fellow fans will immediately recognise it as the poem featured in the “First Snow” episode (season 5, episode 10), read out by Chris Stevens on his radio show. And if you have no idea what I’m talking about here, please check out the links below the poem. And go watch some Northern Exposure!

    O THE SNOW, the beautiful snow,
    Filling the sky and the earth below!
    Over the house-tops, over the street,
    Over the heads of the people you meet,
    Dancing,
    Flirting,
    Skimming along.
    Beautiful snow! it can do nothing wrong.
    Flying to kiss a fair lady’s cheek;
    Clinging to lips in a frolicsome freak;
    Beautiful snow, from the heavens above,
    Pure as an angel and fickle as love!

    O the snow, the beautiful snow!
    How the flakes gather and laugh as they go!
    Whirling about in its maddening fun,
    It plays in its glee with every one.
    Chasing,
    Laughing,
    Hurrying by,
    It lights up the face and it sparkles the eye;
    And even the dogs, with a bark and a bound,
    Snap at the crystals that eddy around.
    The town is alive, and its heart in a glow,
    To welcome the coming of beautiful snow.

    How the wild crowd go swaying along,
    Hailing each other with humor and song!
    How the gay sledges like meteors flash by,—
    Bright for the moment, then lost to the eye!
    Ringing,
    Swinging,
    Dashing they go
    Over the crest of the beautiful snow:
    Snow so pure when it falls from the sky,
    To be trampled in mud by the crowd rushing by;
    To be trampled and tracked by the thousands of feet
    Till it blends with the horrible filth in the street.

    Once I was pure as the snows,—but I fell:
    Fell, like the snow-flakes, from heaven—to hell:
    Fell, to be tramped as the filth of the street:
    Fell, to be scoffed, to be spit on, and beat.
    Pleading,
    Cursing,
    Dreading to die,
    Selling my soul to whoever would buy,
    Dealing in shame for a morsel of bread,
    Hating the living and fearing the dead.
    Merciful God! have I fallen so low?
    And yet I was once like this beautiful snow!

    Once I was fair as the beautiful snow,
    With an eye like its crystals, a heart like its glow;
    Once I was loved for my innocent grace,—
    Flattered and sought for the charm of my face.
    Father,
    Mother,
    Sisters all,
    God, and myself, I have lost by my fall.
    The veriest wretch that goes shivering by
    Will take a wide sweep, lest I wander too nigh;
    For all that is on or about me, I know
    There is nothing that ’s pure but the beautiful snow.

    How strange it should be that this beautiful snow
    Should fall on a sinner with nowhere to go!
    How strange it would be, when the night comes again,
    If the snow and the ice struck my desperate brain!
    Fainting,
    Freezing,
    Dying alone,
    Too wicked for prayer, too weak for my moan
    To be heard in the crash of the crazy town,
    Gone mad in its joy at the snow’s coming down;
    To lie and to die in my terrible woe,
    With a bed and a shroud of the beautiful snow!
