Mrs C and I watched the pilot episode of "Northern Exposure" on DVD with the youngster this evening. I think he liked it, certainly he's said he's happy to keep watching it.
I loved this show as a teenager, and I've watched the whole run a few times over by now, and I still love it.
When I first watched it, it was set in the present day. Each time since, it's got further away. And now, that pilot episode in 1990, well it feels a hell of a long way away...

"Elaine Miles was walking to a bus stop in Redmond to go to Target, she said, when four men wearing masks and vests with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement label stepped out of two black SUVs with no front plates and pressed her for her ID.
"Miles, an Indigenous actor best known for her roles in '#NorthernExposure,' '#SmokeSignals,' '#Wyvern' and '#TheLast OfUs,' handed them her tribal ID from the #ConfederatedTribesOfTheUmatilla Indian Reservation in #Oregon.
"Federal government agencies recognize tribal ID as a valid form of identification, and Miles has used it to travel back and forth to Canada and Mexico without any issues.
"Yet, Miles recalled one agent calling it 'fake.'
" 'Anyone can make that,' she recalled another agent saying.
"Reported encounters between immigration agents and Indigenous people like Miles’ remain rare [BULLSHIT!]. But as immigration enforcement has gotten more aggressive, including in the Seattle area, incidents like Miles’ are stoking fears beyond immigrant communities.
"Miles said her son and uncle were both detained by ICE agents who initially did not accept their tribal IDs before they were eventually let go.

I seriously don't understand why meat pies are generally not a thing in the U.S.A.
We have pot pie (more of a stew-in-a-pie), but meat pies aren't very prevalent. There are kolaches, empanadas, arepas, and some meat pies, but they're all various cultural imports.
May also be a regional thing, I don't know.
I remember there was an episode of #NorthernExposure that was basically a dream sequence, and the doctor guy portrayed the role of some Soviet guy who was basically starving because it was the early Bolshevik era, and he was offered a meat pie and basically went to town on it before he caught himself and restored the illusion that he was just fine under the Bolsheviks and very much not starving (I don't know how accurate any of that was, so don't hold it against me, communist historians of fedi).
Anyway, that meat pie looked absolutely delicious, and now I'm hungry and I want one. XD

John Whittaker Watson was a 19th century poet and journalist from New York. The author of many serials, poems and short stories published in various magazines, today he is probably best known for his poem “Beautiful Snow.” It is found in the collection of poems by the same title, published in Philadelphia in 1871.
An illustration from the 1871 edition of “Beautiful Snow; and Other Poems”I first heard of this poem in an episode of my all-time favourite TV shows from the 1990s, Northern Exposure. I’m sure fellow fans will immediately recognise it as the poem featured in the “First Snow” episode (season 5, episode 10), read out by Chris Stevens on his radio show.
