Gang of Four - At the Palace (1984)
Yeah, this is after Allen & Burnham left, and where the original material dropped off in quality post-Solid Gold, and their "farewell tour", but even with that, they were a formidable live act, and Sara Lee & Steve Goulding were a solid rhythm section.
Boy, I miss Gill's incredibly distinctive guitar work.

Gang of Four - Shrinkwrapped
After the just-not-good Hard, I don't think I expected GoF to ever release another vital album, and Mall looked to put a nail in that particular coffin, but then they proved me wrong with Shrinkwrapped.
Never expected it to come out vinyl, either. Not mad about it!
Gill/King are joined by Dean Garcia (Curve), Phil Butcher, and Monti & Dave Axford.
RIP Andy Gill. You were one of a kind...

Silversun Pickups - Swoon
Little catch-up from a few weeks ago.
2nd album from the Smashing Pumpkins...oh I mean Silversun Pickups.
It's actually a good LP, and if you're not going to kill your idols, why not embrace them?

Genesis - Genesis
This starts off strong with the eerie Mama, although it feels like it belongs on a Collins solo LP... as do a few more of the tracks here.
At this point, Genesis has really become a pop band, with a few "proggier" tracks popping up here and there (especially towards the end). I think this LP was probably their biggest selling one, and may be the peak of their post-prog period.

Count Basie/Joe Turner - The Bosses
Another late-period gem from Pablo (like you couldn’t tell, given the Pablo-esque cover), with Basie and crew backing up Turner in fine form. Blues front to back.
Band includes Zoot Sims & Eddie Davis (tenor), JJ Johnson (trombone), Harry Edison (trumpet), Ray Brown (bass), Irving Ashby (guitar), and Louie Bellson (drums).

Kai Winding & J.J. Johnson = The Great Kai & J.J.
Since the last appearance of Kai Winding & J.J. Johnson, the pair broke up on good terms, and this is from their first reunion in 1960.
They're joined by Bill Evans (piano), Paul Chambers or Tommy Williams (bass), and Art Taylor or Roy Haynes (drums).
Classically RvG sounding, and very enjoyable.

Kai Winding and J.J. Johnson - K + J.J.
Another little gem from Dad's collection - and something I haven't encountered before: what looks to be a quintet led by...two trombonists. Anyway, this mono 1955 Bethelem "East Coast Jazz" release bops right through a set of standards in fine style.
Always interesting to see how the labels would try to come up with striking images to grab your attention in the racks, too.

Roy Hargrove's Crisol - Grand-Terre
There are so many personalities to the late Roy Hargrove's composition and playing, and in Crisol, it's all Afro-Cuban hard bop.
Crisol's first LP, Habana, came out in 1997, and for some reason this follow-up wasn't released until last year.
As with a lot of this stuff, it's not because it isn't great!

John Lewis & Sacha Distel - Afternoon in Paris
MJQ - Bags + Distel (Guitar) & Wilen (Sax), basically, playing a fun group of tunes. A little weird to have most of MJQ playing Bags' Groove without the titular vibes player, but it works anyway.
Pristine Sam Records repress in the original style. Pallas did a great job…

Bad Company - Desolation Angels
I don't know. Bad Company obviously produced a number of early hits, and they are undeniably skilled players. Paul Rogers is one of the great Rock and Roll vocalists.
But, maybe it's just that blues-rockers-becoming-kind-of-AOR-balladeers template is kinda clichéd. There's good stuff on this, leaving aside the weird 1979 syndrum-and-synth bits, but it's...boring?
Sounds good on this Atlantic 75 pressing, though.

Trying for something that might be a bit less known - Gold Dust's The Late, Great Gold Dust.
Easthampton-based Stephen Pierce (of Ampere & Kindling)'s second solo album. A kind of mix of Byrds-ish psychedelia, Townes van Zant, shoegaze… good stuff.

Seefeel - Quique
Whole lotta loopin' going on.
Seefeel is a band that I somehow missed, but this 1993 debut is as good a place to start as any. Imagine distorted guitar washes, occasionally joined by other guitars, barely sketching out a melody, over a looped bassline, or synth, with a vocal peeking out ever so often.
As with a lot of music like this, the looping makes you hyper aware of an instrument suddenly peeking out, or vanishing, or changing a bit...

Funkadelic - Free Your Mind ... and Your Ass Will Follow
"Let's see if we can make a whole album while tripping on acid", he said, and so they did.
And after, they looked upon their work and might have despaired a little. Because while you can't hide the talents of these musicians, you can prevent them from shining as much as they might...and the kind of shrill mix doesn't help.
In other words, it's no Maggot Brain...but it's certainly psychedelic.

AFI - Silver Bleeds the Black Sun
AFI hit a garage sale, found a mysterious reel of tape, discovered it was a previously unreleased Bauhaus record, and released it under their name.
More seriously, I certainly never expected these guys to turn into an amalgamation of Bauhaus, Sisters of Mercy, and the Cure, but I'm certainly not mad about it.

His Saving Grace band is a really great band. I love this reinterpreted version of the Led Zep classic.
Stephen Colbert must've been really enjoying this one. :blobwizard:

Archie Shepp - Four for Trane
Co-produced by Coltrane, this is Shepp's Impulse debut, featuring, as you might expect, all tracks penned by Coltrane.
But that doesn't mean they're *profoundly* altered by Archie Shepp and crew.
Shepp (sax) is joined by John Tchicai (alto), Alan Shorter (trumpet - Wayne's brother), Roswell Rudd (trombone), Reggie Workman (bass), and Charles Moffett (drums)/

bdrmm - Microtonic
More stylistic experimentation from bdrmm, starting off with an almost motorik track, bending into shoegaze, dream pop, etc.
It's almost a game of spot the influence, but not in a bad/derivative way.

Ben Webster - King of the Tenors (aka The Consummate Artistry of Ben Webster)
This 1953 recording is a close mic'ed, first solo outing of Webster's, accompanied by Oscar Peterson (piano), Benny Carter (alto), Harry Edison (trumpet), Herb Ellis & Barney Kessel (guitar), Ray Brown (bass), and Alvin Stoller & JC Heard (drums).
This new Verve/Acoustic Sounds re-release is mastered and pressed as well as you'd expect, and while the LP is short, it's great.
