  1. Sonny Rollins, Way Out West, 1957 on Contemporary

This was the first Rollins album with Ray Brown and Shelly Manne, and the first time he recorded with only bass and drums. I love this cover photo emphasizing the New York native was out west. My copy—direct from Craft Recordings—is the 2009 Original Jazz Classics reissue which was remastered back in 1988 and repressed in 2009. It reproduces the yellow Contemporary labels but with a catalog number OJC-337.

  3. The Oscar Peterson Trio - Affinity

1962 release that seemed appropriate to play after Quintessence, since it starts with Waltz for Debbie, and also features Ray Brown (bass, who contributes an original - Gravy Waltz) and Ed Thigpen (drums)

This is a classic piano trio session, and with Peterson at the keys, you know it's not going to disappoint...

  4. Bill Evans - Quintessence

Late period Evans, on Fantasy, from 1976. On this, he's joined by Harold Land (tenor), Kenny Burrell (guitar), Ray Brown (bass), and Philly Joe Jones (drums).

A relatively short album, with no Evans originals...but the group does a nice job with these tracks.

I'm going to excuse the bad pun in the title.

  5. Jazztodon artist of the week: Ray Brown!
    From @aaj
Arriving in New York at the age of twenty, Hank Jones introduced him to Dizzy Gillespie, who was looking for a bass player. Gillespie hired Brown on the spot and he soon played with such established musicians as Art Tatum and Charlie Parker.

From 1946 to 1951 he played in Gillespie's band. Brown, along with the vibraphonist Milt Jackson, drummer Kenny Clarke, and the pianist John Lewis formed the rhythm section of the Gillespie band, and their work together eventually led to the creation of the Modern Jazz Quartet.

Around this time Brown was also appearing in Jazz at the Philharmonic concerts, organised by Norman Granz. It was at these concerts that he met the jazz singer Ella Fitzgerald, whom he married in 1947.

Brown anchored the Oscar Peterson Trio from 1951 to 1966. He later formed his own trio with Gene Harris and Jeff Hamilton.

He became an elder statesman and one of the most respected players in jazz.

  6. Illinois Jacquet - Swing's the Thing

1956 and Jacquet is making a great case for why Swing should get more respect. Just a whole lot of energetic fun, and when the tempo slows down, some beautiful ballad playing.

With Jacquet (tenor), Roy Eldridge (trumpet), Jimmy Jones (piano), Herb Ellis (guitar), Ray Brown (bass), and Jo Jones—no, not Philly Joe Jones—on drums.

  10. Count Basie/Joe Turner - The Bosses

Another late-period gem from Pablo (like you couldn’t tell, given the Pablo-esque cover), with Basie and crew backing up Turner in fine form. Blues front to back.

Band includes Zoot Sims & Eddie Davis (tenor), JJ Johnson (trombone), Harry Edison (trumpet), Ray Brown (bass), Irving Ashby (guitar), and Louie Bellson (drums).

  11. Joe Pass - Portraits of Duke Ellington

Discusssed by Ken in the referenced video, Joe’s joined by Bobby Durham (drums), and Ray Brown (bass).

    As Ken says—great.

  12. Charlie Parker, The Mercury & Clef 10-inch LP Collection

This 2021 box collects / reproduces the 10″ LPs put out in the early 1950s:

    • Charlie Parker With Strings (1950)
    • Charlie Parker With Strings #2 (1954)
    • Bird and Diz (1952)
    • Charlie Parker Plays South of the Border (1952)
    • Charlie Parker (1954)

I don’t normally collect 10″ records, but got a good deal on this box, which is very well made, reproducing original covers and labels, and with an included book. Neither of the two “Charlie Parker With Strings” LPs actually has the #2 on it which can get confusing – the one with the two birds on it is the second. Most of these reproduce their Mercury labels except for the one just titled Charlie Parker which was only on Clef.

Artwork on all these covers by David Stone Martin. Players with Charlie Parker include Bernie Leighton, Buddy Rich, Ray Brown, Mitch Miller, Max Roach, Al Haig, Percy Heath, Thelonius Monk, Curly Russell, and Dizzy Gillespie (among others). Norman Granz wrote most (all?) the sleeve notes and supervised the recordings.

Still available in the Verve Store (and elsewhere I’m sure) it is well worth picking up.

  16. Milt Jackson - At the Kosei Nenkin

1976 live album on Pablo, recorded in Japan, playing a swinging set with Ray Brown (bass), Teddy Edwards (sax), Cedar Walton (keys), and Billy Higgins (drums).

Japanese pressing retains most of the Pablo style, but without the huge Pablo Live top.

Interesting to note that Japanese gatefolds always come with the first LP in the 2nd (back) location.

  17. #NowListening to #jazz courtesy of #SonnyRollins, #WayOutWest. I love the #Prestige and #Contemporary stuff. For me, West is second only to #SaxophoneColossus: melodic, varied, great musicianship, & proper bite to it. In particular, I love the playing of #RayBrown here.

This 1988 #OJC pressing (I’m assuming it’s #AAA) sounds well rounded with the tone of the saxophone very natural & dynamic. My copy is clean, but there is a dramatic edgewarp on side A.
