Proud and honoured to be standing as the Green Party candidate for the North Shore in the election this year.

The Green Party is the voice in Parliament advocating for people and planet. We are so lucky to live in this amazing country that has enough for us all. Unfortunately, successive governments have prioritised corporate profits over what’s good for people and the environment, leaving us with crumbling infrastructure, worsening inequality, and an increasingly degraded environment.

Coming from a military background, having the Green Party as my political home might not seem intuitive (we’re not known for voting Green a lot of the time). But it is the values instilled in me during my time in the Navy and the Army that brought me to the Greens; serving our country, looking after each other, and leaving the place better than we found it.

Over the next few months I'll be sharing more about the sort of country that we in the Green Party want to build, and how you can help us create it. Let’s get stuck in, New Zealand.

I came across #Upscrolled as an alternative to Facebook/Instagram.

I’m not stoked about the prospect of having another social-esque platform account though 😅 They have some decent answers to the questions of building on open protocols and decentralisation (namely “not yet but we plan to” and “the user experience is better”). They also came through the #TechForPalestine accelerator and haven’t taken VC money, etc.

I’m all for supporting alternatives to Meta’s enshittified platforms is a good thing.

That being said, I still haven’t gotten around to trying #Pixelfed, which seems like it would be a better platform for photo/video sharing given its open source and decentralised.

Does anyone have thoughts on the difference between the two?

If the advice is to do one thing every day that scares you, I've found that lately with #gymnastics

With no previous background in gymnastics I've recently taken up adult classes. I've been focusing on back handsprings and backflips (with the goal of being able to do them from the ground on my own).

This was my first attempt (from a few weeks ago) at doing them own my own into a pool. I also had a bit of help with the height of the diving block. The first few attempts were pretty poor as I was trying to overcome the mental challenge of launching myself backwards without a spotter. The results are obvious in the videos: I wasn't putting enough force into springing away from the platform and wasn't going straight back over.

This session was just about doing the movement, committing to the action despite the mental hesitation. Landing a few, despite what they looked like, gave me the encouragement to come back a few days later and try again, with much better results.

Does anyone know why the #Takapuna markets are no longer set up in this area of Whaiwharariki Square? The markets were all over this area a few months ago until they were suddenly much smaller, and it appears this whole area is off limits to stall holders.

The markets were starting to get good too; with the sudden reduction in the number of stall holders, it appears the main casualties have been food stalls, grocery stalls, and 2nd hand sellers. Unfortunately the ones that survived look like resellers of things bought on Temu and 3D printed junk.

Furthermore the hours have noticeably decreased as well: a couple of months ago there was still a lot of activity at 2 pm and now things are wrapping up by 12.

Such a disappointment as the markets bring (or brought) a lot of life to the centre of Takapuna on the weekend.

Te Hiku Media trained an AI model for Te Reo Māori transcription to digitise the thousands and thousands of hours of archival footage.

Peter-Lucas, @keoni, and their team developed their first model in 2016 that had an 86% accuracy rate when transcribing Te Reo. They decided that wasn’t good enough (despite commercial models being only 50% accurate), and since then have been training better models.

They have built ethical, sovereign AI from the ground up. It’s possible. And they have proved it.

I’m listening to the excellent #juggernaut2 podcast series from #TheSpinoff about the 4th National Government.

The thing that has struck me the most so far is the absolute callous disregard that #RuthRichardson appears to have toward the vast numbers of Kiwis hurt in the welfare cuts she undertook.

#JimBolger has always been an empathetic figure given the way that he talks about his government’s cuts. He did what he believed was necessary and yet seems genuinely concerned about the wellbeing of New Zealanders.

Richardson on the other hand comes across as gleeful when talking about the enormous cuts to the welfare state. An absolute zealot who seems to not care about the human cost of pursuing “balanced books”.

And rather than being consigned to an unfortunate and socially damaging part of our history, she’s unfortunately now the chair of the astroturf “Tax Payers Union”.

Apparently the junk tank that calls itself the #taxpayersunion has put out a report saying that inequality in NZ is decreasing.

Conveniently they cherry picked data which doesn’t take into account a) the full time period for which we can look at, which stretches before and after the period they chose, and b) capital gains, which contribute far more to the income of the rich than the poor.

Fortunately Max #Rashbrooke at the #InstituteforDemocraticandEconomicAnalysis does a superb job of analysing what they did (and more importantly didn’t) include.
