  1. "[Westpac NZ chief executive Catherine] McGrath herself was featured in a fake article, which was linked from Meta platforms, which showed deep fakes of her clashing with NZ First leader Winston Peters. The bank lodged complaints with Meta, which the bank said were ignored."

If a TV station broadcast stuff like this, and management refused to take meaningful action to prevent a repeat, they'd be shut down. Why not FB?

  2. Oh wow. Just been reading; for a #PayID payment into a #Westpac account the period whereby the sender can claim it was a Mistaken Internet Payment is.... wait for it... 7 months!!! You can be scammed 7 months after receiving payment. And the best bit, the banks might not even tell you, they just accept each other's word and transfer the money back.
I am learning lessons this week.

  7. Apparently have succeeded in sending $500 to a relative in South Africa.

    #Westpac has, during this process;
suspended my internet and phone banking,
demanded I visit a branch in person to verify my ID,
not taken the block off my phone banking when they should have,
not sent a OTC as requested, etc, etc.

ABSA has charged +$50 to return money they wouldn't deposit into an account that they'd received the details for.

And WU website didn't work nicely either.

    May send $ overseas?
    Set it up now.

  8. Tried "international banking" with SWIFT / BIC codes etc using a big Australian bank, Westpac.

They blocked my internet banking in retaliation.

Had to attend a branch in person and then wait +3 hours for a verification phone call to get access to internet banking again.

Fortunately no one was in urgent need of the money.
And hopefully I'll be able to smoothly transfer money in future.
    But the ✓@π§∆°! service.

  9. So why does the Westpac CEO bloke get a free spruiking session on the supposedly non-commercial ABC just because Westpac sponsor cricket?? #Westpac #ABCAustralia #TheAshes

  10. @John wait until you try and withdraw over $10k cash. Assuming you can a) find a branch b) it's not gone cashless.
#Westpac were also the first institution I've ever dealt with in my life that rejected my signature (it went a little outside of the Sign Here box).

  11. #Fucking #Westpac #threatening to close my account if I don’t provide #ID documents. The same documents I provided over 40 years ago to open the account!

(Not spam, via my banking app)

They also demand the right to forward my details to 3rd parties.

They also want my #birthCertificate. Getting one will cost about $85. And I’lI need to have a #JusticeOfThePeace verify other ID documents before #Qld Births, Deaths & Marriages issue it!

What fresh new hell is this Westpac!? #auspol $$$$$

  13. Apparently I can close all my accounts with #Westpac, but I'm still gonna get emails from them – and those emails won't include any unsubscribe options.

So, updated email filters it is. Fucking banks.

  14. I also asked, if #Westpac have been mailing me at an old P.O. Box addy, why did they send this particular letter to my home addy?

    “Ummmmm…”

All very weird. I wonder what they spent all that money on.

And how did they verify/activate the card after receiving it?

  15. #Westpac

I received a letter at my home address today - my #account & #MasterCard have been #closed due to #nonpayment of over $5,000 on the card.

    I haven’t had a MasterCard since 2005 & use a debit card.

I rang to see #WTF was going on. “We’ve been sending you letters”.

This letter is the 1st I heard about it.

“We’ve been sending letters to your P.O. Box”.

    I haven’t had a P.O. Box since 2010.

    “Hmmm”

My guess, my old P.O. Box received a credit card in my name & went shopping. #auspol

  16. Westpac Bank has achieved top marks in its latest customer satisfaction survey, with 100% of responses indicating an overwhelmingly positive option of the bank. It's unknown if anyone expressed a negative option or what happened to those surveys. It's a mystery.

  23. Review of #UPbank.

My husband and I have got rid of our mortgage and our usual bank has been bought out by #anz so we decided we wanted to have fun.

Looking around we discovered #UpBank. We do have quite a bit of savings so I thought I should do my homework. There were several things:

    1. They are a youth version of banking backed by the Bendigo and Adelaide Bank.
    2. The website is very colourful and flashy so had to check everything out.
    3. There were mixed reviews online. People who said it was great, people who hated it.

So we thought why not and OMG is it fun.

My husband and I created our own Up accounts and then created a joint 2Up Account. Debit card numbers supplied with all.

Every transaction we get pinged on so we both know when money is coming in and out…so much better than our previous bank. Also I have had Commbank accounts prior to #suncorp and my #SMSF is in #westpac, chinese walls and all that. None of these big banks thought joint account owners should be told when money is moving around.

So any bill I set up to be paid my husband knows it is paid and won’t nag me later to ask if it is paid. Bliss.

The savings tool in Up is ….I’m going to say…awesome. So much fun. I’ve set up all sorts of buckets for different reasons. As interest rates are a joke I really don’t care whether theirs is more or less than someone else’s. In my financial brain they are about right.

The app is very easy to use…..but I like playing with apps, I don’t think I would put my 80+ year old parents on it.

We got our daughter to set up one as she will be boarding next year in another state and we wanted something that she could work with. She was always having problems with the stodgy Suncorp App.

Don’t think #Upbank is laps on security. I got put on hold when trying to, stupidly, transfer money to my husband. I hadn’t yet got my head around how easy this thing was and did something dumb. After a couple of hours, with passport photo check on New Year’s day, all was sweet.

You don’t have to get a debit card printed…they are using all wallet functionality and I always forget to have the card on me….I wish the state governments would hurry up with drivers licences.

If you like to hold a debit card in your hand you get one provided. Your choice.

    So to summarise:

    * getting rid of my credit card (yah!)
    * moving my company to the stodgy version of Bendigo and Adelaide Bank because you know companies can’t have good communication fun.
    * Setting up my 12 year old on B&A Bank as he isn’t old enough to join #upbank yet.

    * still having fun transferring my money over from my old bank to Up. I am taking it slowly and checking everything and slotting the money into appropriate savings groups.
    * I get insights so I can see where the money is being spent.
    * I open up my savings so I watch the money splash around. Never get tired of it.

  24. @blakeheathsnow Maybe shareholders can pay extra every time they buy or sell #Commbank #Westpac #NAB etc shares. That would be a #fairgo 🤔

  25. Did someone at #Westpac NZ have a moment? I feel that.

  26. Australia's banking system is rigged in favor of the big banks, leading to record profits for them while everyday Aussies struggle with rising interest rates and mortgage repayments. The lack of competition in the banking sector allows banks to pass on costs to borrowers without sharing the benefits with savers, resulting in a massive transfer of wealth from the average punter to bank CEOs and shareholders

  31. Westpac NZ Chief Economist on #rnz this morning saying that “banks can’t do much about climate change, obviously”. You sure about that? #westpac Group lent $533 million to fossil fuel projects in 2023

  32. How Australia's major #banks lent $3.6b to #fossilfuel projects last year using 'back door' methods despite their #climate pledges. A new report reveals that #ANZ, #NAB, #Westpac, and #Commonwealthbank #cba collectively lent $3.6 billion to #fossilfuels projects or companies in 2023.

  33. Years ago we banked with a building society. Great service, lots of branches. They merged with another. Still good. They became a bank. Service declined. Closures. Acquired by Westpac, but remained "independent". 🤔 Remaining branches were soon shared with Westpac (ie, closed). ATMs all replaced with ones that charge. Now my bank's logo has largely disappeared, service, minimal though it is, is shithouse.

    Enshittification has been achieved.

  34. It seems #westpac are still determine to push for ONLY mobile banking.

Every time i login from my desktop, i get this popup.

More and more i hate mobile use and it seems they believe mobile is the only #technology #mobile #tech

As soon as they remove functionallity unless on mobile, is the day i change banks.

  35. #westpac now acknowledging their issue when you log in — progress!

  36. Westpac online banking down in a serious way: downdetector.com.au showing quite the spike. No official acknowledgement on the westpac pages. Bit of a shit-show really. #westpac

  37. Congratulations to Westpac Australia for announcing their annual report today.

A nice tidy AUD $887 million extracted from the New Zealand line item, to be redistributed to shareholders at 72 cents per share.

Could have made more money but there was a “deterioration in portfolio quality” (i.e. they’ve already taken all the Kiwis spare cash and some customers are now broke).

  38. CW: Sydney anti-coal rally: today in CBD, very late notice

    *Very late notice*

I've just discovered that there is a #rally today at 12pm in Sydney CBD, outside the Hilton Hotel (488 George St).

It is protesting the ongoing (though now less transparently acknowledged) funding of new #coal projects by the #BigFour Australian banks (#NAB, #ANZ, #CBA and #Westpac), specifically NAB's funding for #WhitehavenCoal. The location is where AFR's Banking Summit is being held.

The protest is jointly organised by #350.orgAustralia and #MoveBeyondCoal, in partnership with other groups too, I believe.
