I came across #Upscrolled as an alternative to Facebook/Instagram.
I’m not stoked about the prospect of having another social-esque platform account though 😅 They have some decent answers to the questions of building on open protocols and decentralisation (namely “not yet but we plan to” and “the user experience is better”). They also came through the #TechForPalestine accelerator and haven’t taken VC money, etc.
I’m all for supporting alternatives to Meta’s enshittified platforms is a good thing.
That being said, I still haven’t gotten around to trying #Pixelfed, which seems like it would be a better platform for photo/video sharing given its open source and decentralised.
Does anyone have thoughts on the difference between the two?

It looks like #Bitchat might be gathering some traction in Gaza?
As a reminder, bitchat is a mesh network using your phone's bluetooth. So even without internet, you could have private messages sent from phone to phones.
Gaza having such a high population density and because Israel is known to have penetrated WhatsApp, this might be a good off-the-grid solution

The "Waves To Gaza" movement has made an interesting use of open-source software to support human rights activists for the liberation of Palestine by creating an action mapper for protests based on the R/Shiny web app framework.

OK #TechForPalestine has got a neat addon that warns you if you follow a link to an Israeli owned or affiliated site.
But it doesn't work on #Firefox because:
"Somebody reported it for “spreading hate”, despite the fact that the plugin simply provides information. It doesn’t ban you from visiting a website, making a purchase, applying to a job, or any other action whatsoever."
This is the problem with all good tech. Fucking corporate shitheads getting in the way.

I believe we have a moral obligation to oppose genocide and to make our opposition known.
What's going on now did not begin last October. It began in 1948 when 750,000 Palestinians were displaced and hundreds were massacred. It is the continuation of a colonial settler project to use any violence necessary to remove a people from their land. We must oppose it.
