  9. Not being an expert in anything arachnoid, I had to resort to to tell me that this is probably a mirabilis spider, out on the hunt amongst the oak leaves on the ground.

  11. A spur of the moment drive from to Fenit harbour gave me the good fortune to snap this with my . Just missed the dolphins feeding of the harbour point underneath St. Brendan's statue. Fortunately, we'd seen them a few days prior to today from St. Brandon's point across the bay in the background where the cliffs meet the sea.

  13. It was a day for the , as I was out clearing a path through the long grass in the , . Whilst out, I had a curiosity visit from three , albeit not the ones in the picture below, taken one summer's evening several year's ago. At the same time, a decided to perch in an oak nearby and call out very loudly to all and sundry, and then a magnificent came and landed right in my field of view to peck at a pine and call out forlornly.

  14. Most descriptions I've read about European jays state say "shy birds". Where we live, in the , very much not the case. They are highly gregarious, groups of 5 or more regularly fighting over food, cackling and squawking, and chasing around the garden. Taken under the bird feeder here, where they have learned the trick of jumping on it to spin it, causing peanuts to be flung over the ground, where they then clean up.
