I've been trying to catch a half-decent picture of this #GreatSpottedWoodpecker on the #birdfeeder, as it flies off at the slightest sign of movement in the house, and only ever seems to come when I'm sat in the #HomeOffice behind my desk and computer screen and unable to sneak out to get my trusty #nikond300. This time though, after crawling through the back of the house out of sight, I managed to snap a few before it got spooked and flew off again.

It was a day for the #birds, as I was out clearing a path through the long grass in the #wood, #notsosilentsunday. Whilst out, I had a curiosity visit from three #goldenorioles, albeit not the ones in the picture below, taken one summer's evening several year's ago. At the same time, a #cuckoo decided to perch in an oak nearby and call out very loudly to all and sundry, and then a magnificent #blackwoodpecker came and landed right in my field of view to peck at a pine and call out forlornly.

More tales from the #forest, with this close up of the remains of the #trunk of a wild #cherry tree which had died, rotted and snapped at about 1m50 height. I don't know how the #woodchips in the well of the #trunk formed, but presumably linked to the structure of the wood, and some kind of specific #weathering due to #contraction in the #summer heat, and #saturation in the #winter humidity.

Most descriptions I've read about European jays state say "shy birds". Where we live, in the #Auvergne, very much not the case. They are highly gregarious, groups of 5 or more regularly fighting over food, cackling and squawking, and chasing around the garden. Taken under the bird feeder here, where they have learned the trick of jumping on it to spin it, causing peanuts to be flung over the ground, where they then clean up.

Today heralded the arrival of the first #snow flurries here at home in the #Livradois-Forez, #Auvergne. We're fortunate enough to get our fair share of absolutely gob-smacking sunsets from the comfort of our living room, although I stepped outside briefly to capture this on my Xiaomi phone. Here the #sun is casting its final splash over the #Cézallier Plateau on the south-western edge of the #Puy-de-Dôme and the north-eastern border of the #Cantal.

A #vine-like plant such as #BlackBryony grows pretty much anywhere and everywhere in our #wood, given half a chance, and is almost as resistant as the thickets of #brambles. The red #berries have come out on this one, but are of the *DO NOT EAT* kind. They contain, among others, a #neurotoxin known as #dioscorine.

Unfortunately, my lack of knowledge of #spiders has left me stumped with this one, almost ghost-like, found rummaging around some fallen over mushroom stems at the base of a fallen oak. #googlelens doesn't seem to be able to help. Anyone more knowledgeable than me with an idea?

Not being an expert in anything arachnoid, I had to resort to #googlelens to tell me that this is probably a #Pisaura mirabilis spider, out on the hunt amongst the oak leaves on the ground.

This #GreyHeron was a bit miffed to find it's latest feeding paradise in the long grass of the fallow field taken over by three #GreatWhiteEgrets. Surprisingly, no scuffles other than some brief grandstanding ensued, and all of the birds hung around together the entire morning.

Last weekend, we had about 20 of these #butterflies feeding off the Mexican orange bush just coming into flower again. Most were fairly clear phenotypes of the #SmallCopper #butterfly. This one drew my attention due to purple edge wings reminiscent of the #PurpleEdgedCopper. Can anyone help out ? Is this some kind of hybrid or is the purple edging a known variation for small coppers?

A spur of the moment drive from #Tralee to Fenit harbour gave me the good fortune to snap this with my #PocoF1. Just missed the dolphins feeding of the harbour point underneath St. Brendan's statue. Fortunately, we'd seen them a few days prior to today from St. Brandon's point across the bay in the background where the cliffs meet the sea.

In a previous post I mentioned that we would soon be hearing the drumming of one of our local spotted woodpeckers. Well, here we are, with a somewhat louder than usual rendition making use of a rusty tin can. Usually, they just stick to the trees, but I guess this one might have thought the can would impress the others more!
