  2. @fizzlesticks Funny, Health Alliance told me today that my insurance will not cover medication for the condition which leads to me taking a number of other medication and puts my health at risk in a wide variety of ways #singlepayernow

  3. Faculty folk -- I'm rounding out my workshops so I have a full week of offerings. I'm two short. (I realize no one wants a full week but me...).

What do you wish you knew about publishing as a new faculty member? What do you wish you had learned in grad school about hidden curriculums and publishing? #AcademicsOfMastodon #AcademicChatter

  4. I have a HUGE ask, #academicsofmastodon.

I'm prepping a workshop abt responding to peer reviews and I find myself in need of real world peer reviews/reader responses.

If any of you have a peer review you would be willing to share with me, I would greatly appreciate it. I would be delighted with one that represents your platonic ideal of a reader response, as well as a completely out of line response, or anything in between.

  5. AAUP did some interesting things back in the 90s, all of which desperately need updates. For example, I was just referred to the 1995 _Guidelines for Bias-Free Writing_ they wrote by task force.

And I desperately love my copy of 1 Book 5 Ways (1978, with a 1994 foreword) and would love to see a modern revision, reflecting current production and editorial processes. ( I mean computers, for a start...)

  6. Oh well. I loved 2023 for a day, and then realized that it's not a whole new year, it's a whole new deductible

  7. I ask that question in all honesty, as someone who left my doctoral program in 2000, who copyedits and develops scholarly manuscripts, but who does not do peer review itself. I thought the move toward instruction was one of kindness, not a categorical change or expectation. I've even thought it quite an entitled expectation.

I'm open to being wrong, but am curious about the shift.

  12. I was trying to work, but my 8 pound cat just knocked the Chicago Manual of Style off my desk! She's tiny but mighty, and made of mischief

  13. #indexing books before the #copyedit really drives home the degree to which #acquisition #editors (at least at this #press) do not do any mansucript development.

How do we normalize the hiring of #developmentaleditors as SOP in the book writing process, given this absence (at least at those presses where this is a structural absence)?

  20. Dave is a wonderful assistant.

Barbie meanwhile is under the desk, chewing on cords and scratching folders, turning my SAD lamp on and off and occasionally standing between me and the screen while trying to get Dave to come make mischief

  24. I've got a new set of pages in front of me to index, and so am catching up on Mastaodon.

Any other have this same avoidant "starting" technique? It's a good book, but a bad process!
