Why California Health Care Costs More in Monterey Than LA

Prices for the same hospital services vary wildly, with no relation to quality, researchers have found.

From hospital to hospital, prices for the same service vary wildly, with no relation to quality, researchers have found. In Monterey County, California, local employers and unions have long decried the prices charged by the local hospitals.

  8. The Council for National Policy's Project 2025 'Mandate for Leadership' chapter on HHS
argues that because the CDC has been doing public health badly (which it has! though not in the ways they say) it should stop doing it at all.

  9. The Council for National Policy's Project 2025 'Mandate for Leadership' section on health care has all the awful things you'd expect from them--restrictions on abortion and gender affirming care, deregulation of the health insurance industry and further privatizing of medicare, and more! They want work requirements for medicaid, more use of AI in healthcare, and of course No more mask mandates, no more recommendations from the CDC. It's a nightmare.

But we know that masking works to reduce spread of Covid-19 and other diseases.
    kolektiva.social/@anarchademic

We also know that a rapidly mutating virus for which we lack good vaccine protection is *all the more reason* for universal masking.

  10. So, Eric Topol thinks medical use of AI might reduce the rate of diagniostic errors, which apparently kill or permanently disable about 800,000 americans each year.

But another thing that might reduce the rate of diagnostic errors would be physicians spending more time with each patient (you know, listening to them, thinking about the patient's case history, doing a little research).

This, apparently is not an option, presumably because there is more money in forcing doctors to rush through each patient consultation and spend more time on insurance paperwork, and someone will be making more money from the AI systems.

In a better world (or even a better nation-state than the US), education would be free, including medical school, and we could have more doctors and no one would be trying to extract every last penny out of the medical-industrial complex.

But in a better world we would also not have let the latest pandemic run rampant and cause brain damage that surely only makes it harder for doctors to think.
