Quote of the day, 6 June: Sr. Louise of Mercy, OCD
Of all the French nuns of the seventeenth century, none is more intriguing than Sister Louise of Mercy, the former Louise de la Vallière, the mistress of Louis XIV.
Louise de la Vallière was born at Orléans in 1645, the step-daughter of the Marquis de Saint-Rémy. She was brought to Paris and presented at the court of Louis XIV, the Sun King, that absolute monarch who was driving and goading France to its point of greatest national prominence.
Louis XIV was a short, rugged, rather handsome man in a heavy-featured way, and he had a series of mistresses during his long reign. The young girl from Orléans caught his eye, and he immediately installed her as his mistress and court favorite. “Bid me die or leave me,” the king said to her.
Louise was apparently a woman of rare charm and she enchanted the court.
A blonde with sapphire eyes, she walked with a slight limp. The poet La Fontaine wrote of her that she had “grace more beautiful than beauty.” And an enemy of hers, commenting on her soft, low-pitched voice, said that “it was so sweet that no one who ever heard it could ever forget it.” Louise bore the king three illegitimate children and she seemed to be genuinely in love with him.
But she suffered the fate of court mistresses, and after a few years, the king replaced her with his then-current favorite, Madame Athénaïs de Montespan. Louise, then only twenty-four, was deeply stricken and she retired from court circles, depressed, confused, and anguished.
During a five-year period Louise recovered herself, repented of her past conduct, and embarked on a severe program of penance.
At the age of twenty-nine she sought admission to the Carmel on the rue Saint-Jacques [the first Discalced Carmelite monastery in France]. Bossuet preached the sermon at her profession a year later in 1675, and the event was the sensation of Paris.
Louise of Mercy spent the remaining thirty-five years of her life in the convent, and she was an exemplary nun, faithful, cheerful, and extremely penitential.
During the period immediately before she entered the convent, she had written a treatise about the mercy of God, and in 1680, the prioress published this monograph anonymously under the title Reflections on the Mercy of God. However, the authorship of the book published by the Carmel was quite evident, and it became the talk of Paris.
The most delightful scene in the life of Louise de La Vallière occurred shortly after she had entered the convent when she was visited by Athénaïs de Montespan, her successor as the king’s mistress.
It was a scene which could only have transpired between two women.
The lady of the court sat on the other side of the convent grille and chatted amiably with the nun who, according to witnesses, seemed to bear the visit with amused indifference. As Mademoiselle de Montespan rose to leave, she mentioned that she was returning to the palace and would see the king, and then asked: “Is there anything you would like me to say to the king for you?”
Louise bowed her head slightly toward her visitor.
“Whatever you like, Madame, whatever you like.”
Then she turned and walked slowly away.

"Tahitian Landscape," Paul Gauguin, 1891.
Gauguin (1848-1903) is by turns famous and infamous. He's notorious for abandoning his family to move to Tahiti for artistic freedom, and he's (rightfully) respected for art and his use of color. But he's also (again, rightfully) the subject of controversy given his relationships with teenaged mistresses and his connections to colonialism. In other words, he's complicated.
There's a ton written about him, going into more detail, and better written and researched, than I can do here. I can't dismiss him outright because he's too influential, but I can't put him on too high a pedestal, either. He definitely seemed to combine the qualities of a great artist with the aspects of a seedy sex tourist.

🇩🇪 intel service BND is experiencing severe backlash after 🇷🇺 double agent was discovered and detained.
As a result 🇬🇧 & 🇺🇸 intel services reduced flow of info to almost zero.
The suspect, C. L. (who is fully named in newspapers), appears to be an AfD sympathiser. AfD is a right wing extremist, xenophobic, nationalist party - which however is totally fanboying Russia and Putin. [1][2]
Besides his wife he is said to have two mistresses, which the FSB might have used against him in some sort of kompromat.
L. had a significant position inside the BND, working with "highly sensitive SIGINT from across NATO, has to be assumed to have been compromised".
Even worse, L. was the designated of internal security. Which means he would have been responsible for security clearance and background checks.
This would have positioned him to feed intel about agents directly to Moscow.The breach of the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) in 2015 is a good example of how valuable such data is. [3] [4]
All of this matches the desasterous picture about German intelligence depicted by John Sipher - ret. CIA National Clandestine Service - in Sept. 2022. [5]
The Germans are not a reliable partner when it comes to RU - not because they can't but because politicians hold them back."For example, when voices from other countries have been raised that Russia increasingly poses a threat, German analysts and top people - mostly from the BND - have almost always reacted very arrogantly, claiming that they understand the Russians much better than anyone else."

Gemini (金昭玉醉) is unabashedly aware of what it is, and it’s not apologisin’
This 28-episode short drama (each episode at around 15 minutes), has a The Double-ish premise — the usual revenge/reborn thing.
Princess Lu Zhao suffers at the hands of her husband, who covets her wealth. So, she throws herself off the mansion in despair. And as she lay dying, she wishes vengeance on the evil people and somehow attracts the spirit of the just deceased chief of a notorious sect that serves as the emperor’s secret police. This ruthless femme fatale, Xiao Jin Yu, died about the same time.
Her “twin brother” Xiao Ren (not biological, promise) tries to bring Jin Yu back through a dark ritual, but the magic gets complicated, and she ends up in the princess’s body and resurrects.
In her new body, Jin Yu no longer has the memories of her former sect leader life. So, with her newfound ruthlessness, the resurrected Lu Zhao toys with her former tormentors like a cat with her prey, wrecking vengeance.
And Xiao Ren decides that since she has no memories, it’s time to get close to her. So he protects her while wooing and flirting with her.
My thoughts about the drama
I had finished an intense work period and needed something light (aka brainless), so I thought to myself, hey why not just have a look — it’s only 15 minutes. .
Nine episodes later, and there are already poisons, dark magic, drownings, assassinations, black magic, mistresses, adultery, falls off cliffs, kisses, aphrodisiacs, and sibling-not-really romance — plus the removal of clothes. To Xiao Wei’s credit, despite Lu Zhao being doused with a love potion at one point, he doesn’t take advantage.
It’s deliciously trashy, and I am seated. 🤣
And you know what? The quality of this drama — the camera work and acting — is better than a lot of long dramas these days. It makes me wonder just why this is so.
Since A Familiar Stranger, I’ve been looking for short Cdramas just as good. Unfortunately, after the format became popular, there was a gold rush of sorts and quality dropped as cheap rush jobs became the norm. After a while, many short dramas earned the reputation of being low-budget, salacious dramas with unbearably choppy editing.
Fortunately, Gemini feels pretty smooth and is as good as A Familiar Stranger.
Although the drama’s plot and acting isn’t particularly unique, I think our main actors Zhao Jun Wei (Xiao Wei) and Zhu Li Lian (Lu Zhao) did well. The story, although melodramatic at times, doesn’t veer too far into ridiculousness. It is fun and engaging enough for me to continue watching episode to episode.
If you’ve not tried short dramas before, this is a good one to try!
