  6. TIP: If you ever start scanning in old #family #photos and capturing #videos, keep them all in ONE folder, do not copy them and start processing them separately, you may start working again on the wrong folder and you may end up with several inconsistent folders to process.

Also do a naming convention, like
<year>.<who is on photo>.<place>.<other tags>.<other tags> (etc).jpg, because if you do it that way, you can quickly search images and videos using a file manager without having to go through them.

The more effort you put in now, the less you need to do in the future.

If you need to capture old #movies, like #Hi8/#Super8, then pulling down the curtains and projecting the movie into a closet with a white back is sufficient.

IMPORTANT: just make sure to aim the camera as straight as you can into it and disable autofocus by setting a specific focus, or else videos can be blurry once you start recording a new video.

There is specific hardware to do these things well, but the only hardware i bought was a scanner for #slides/#negatives. There was a company who said that they could do it but the price quote i got (€1500) was a bit too much.

So instead, I spend €200 on supplementing my camera with gear + bought the #negative scanner and got a whole #photo lab for that price, I already had a regular photo scanner so didn't need that (they are usually cheap anyway).

  8. A new film camera. Who woulda thunk it?

I was really excited when I heard that Pentax was going to make a new camera model. My Dad’s camera, which hurled me down the film shootin’ rabbit hole that I likely will never be able to crawl out of, is a Pentax so that’s kind of karmically fitting.

Then they announced it was going to be half frame. Huh. Okay, I guess. I have enough trouble getting things to look half decent in a full frame resolution, I can only imagine how shitty my stuff would look at half of the resolution. I was still interested, but a little less interested.

Then I learned that it’s not an autofocusing camera, and it’s also not a manual focusing camera. It’s just a zone focus deal and since it’s not an SLR you don’t see through the lens when you look through the viewfinder, so focusing is literally guesswork. Huh.

Am I still interested? Yes. Am I as interested as I was a few days ago? No.

The YouTube is suddenly riddled with review videos. Today must be the officially sanctioned Pentax Press Day, or whatever they call it in the biz.

Here is one I have watched:

The Bad Flashes video just said the sale price will be $499 and the on sale date will be June 24th via the Pentax website. $499 is too expensive for me. My interest just dropped to very near zero. Sorry, Charlie. Maybe if the price comes down I will check it out, just to be a part of the party and stuff.

Here’s hoping it’s successful and leads to a new full frame SLR. That would be really cool.

  12. So I'm doing this again; my daughter walked for one designer Friday and walks for another tomorrow, and I'm attending as a #photographer for the day to get better angles and work on my skills.
#Fashion art #Toronto is a really cool project bringing together local designers with volunteer models and an interested public to see their wares.
I spent yesterday evening making sure my memory cards were ready and testing autofocus settings.

  13. I wrote something the other day about the new Pentax 17. The first new Pentax film camera developed since the 1840’s (approximately). I love the idea of it but it’s half frame and zone focusing and more expensive than I was hoping (though just about as expensive as I figured it would be). Also, the camera I took from my father when we cleaned out the house is a Pentax so that seemed fitting somehow.

I won’t be buying one. At least not for a while. I want either an SLR or a point and shoot. They say they are working on both of those, but I’ll just have to wait and see.

Turns out there is another new film camera on the way. It’s a point and shoot with autofocus and it’s not half frame. That sounds awesome! It’s called the Rollei 35AF though I guess it isn’t made by Rollei? Whoever makes it is just licensing the name? I guess. Also it’s going to cost 200-300 more than than Pentax 17 so… yikes. Again, way more than I want to spend, but probably just what I would have expected to spend. This is more like what I would like to invest in, though I would still much rather get a new SLR that would have little side benefits like repairability and warrantees and fun stuff like that.

    Still, it’s intriguing. We’ll see.

  14. I’ve had my #Sony #RX10MarkIV since March 2022. It feels like I’ve had this camera for a LOT longer than that. I was prepared to say I’ve had it for over 5 years, but I digress.
I didn’t fall in love with this camera like my other Sony cameras because the autofocus would hunt and often give up during #MacroPhotography.
Since I bought my Fuji, I’ve been ironically learning about Sony #filmsimulationrecipes, making your photos look like film, straight out of camera.
When I started shooting, I ran into the Sony autofocus problem all over again. After going online and wading through self-important “expert” posts from Sony snobs who refused to be helpful, I finally found out what was wrong. Apparently, I had a focus limiter switch on the lens body and it was turned on.

Mir ist das kleine 9-18 mm kaputt gegangen.

Von der Größe wundervoll, Lichtstärke hat mir gereicht.

  28. For the first time ever, I have purchased a third party lens for one of my cameras. It is a Meike 85mm F/1.8. I’ve never had an aperture wider than F/2.0 before so get ready for lots of blurry background fun. The reviews I have read said the autofocus is a bit of a gamble, and in the few minutes I’ve been playing with it I believe it. The same reviews suggest that keeping the aperture wide open might not be the best move, but it’s going to take some time before I get over the 1.8 giddiness so we’ll have to see about that.

Here are a few pointless shots where I just prove to myself that the lens actually works. It does.

That last one is at F1.8 and the plant is in front of a window which is why the background is totally obliterated. That’s not a lens issue, that’s a composition issue. Also a photographer sucks at photography issue. Clearly.

So a new lens to play with! WOOHOO! Does this mean we try for a sunrise at the ocean trip tomorrow? Maybe.

  29. Red-winged Blackbird (Agelaius phoeniceus)

Small birds tend to move erratically, often hopping from branch to branch. They rarely sit still long enough for the photographer to focus and get the shot and birds rarely pose in a way that exposes their bodies without a leaf or twig obscuring a part of the bird's body. And even when the bird’s body is unobscured, the background is either too distracting or backlit. This plays tricks on the camera's autofocus and autoexposure settings. I have tried using fully manual controls but it’s [...]
