I think it is 'bout time we declared today (Aug 6) International Pulsars Day since today was the day that Dame Prof. Jocelyn Bell Burnell (aka Queen JBB) discovered them!
I write about #Pulsars a lot (as it is my field of study) so here are a few #SpaceAustralia links if you wish to read more about them:

I've also included a couple of graphics to celebrate (and in the next post too) that you are more than welcome to use with creditation.

Fast Radio Bursts (FRBs) are millisecond duration bursts of radio waves that travel across the Universe - and to date, we still are unsure what causes them (though, we have theories).
They were discovered in 2007 when looking for archival data collected by Parkes 📡
The three senior science authors who led the discovery, Duncan Lorima, Maura McLaughlin and Matthew Bailes have now published an overview of FRBs, and its great!
So nice to see undergrad student Ash Narkevic credited with their role in this huge discovery in science too!
Whilst we don't know what causes FRBs, we can use them as probes to 'weigh' the Universe with them! Wrote about this here: https://www.spaceaustralia.com/index.php/feature/we-found-it-fast-radio-bursts-shed-light-missing-matter
Read the FRB review article (Lorimer, McLaughlin, Bailes) here: https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s10509-024-04322-6

Back home after a wonderful week at the Australian Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) in #Narrabri. It was such a wonderful week to connect with other PhDs, and hear from experts in our field, along with go inside the telescopes and control them for observing.
Going through my DSLR photos from our visit, here's a not-so-good one, that is still kinda good. Others are much better.
This is a night shot! The illumination on the dishes comes from the Moon! (see the lights are on)
A couple of Kangaroos in the foreground keeping watch of me.
Will process more this week, but am now spending time with my little doggo mate and other half!

GNU Radio is not only affiliated with @setiinstitute organizationally - there's a lot of (cryogenically) cool signal processing happening at #SETI's Allen Telescope Array. Here's Wael Farah, project scientist, fascinating with high throughput processing :)

Am so very excited for this series of four feature articles, coming out over the next couple of weeks - have worked really hard on these!
Diving into my fav cosmic objects - pulsars - but also how we are using them in our pulsar timing experiments to look for the gravitational wave backgrounds.
🚨 Keep your eyes on these articles! 🚨

Arecibo radio telescope’s massive instrument platform has collapsed
On Monday night, the enormous instrument platform that hung over the Arecibo radio telescope's big dish collapsed due to the failure of the remaining cables supporting it. The risk of this sort of failure was the key motivation behind the National Science Foundation's recent decision to shut down the observatory, as the potential for collapse made any attempt to repair the battered scope too dangerous for the people who would do the repairs.
Right now, details are sparse. The NSF has confirmed the collapse and says it will provide more information once it's confirmed. A Twitter account from a user from Puerto Rico shared an image that shows the support towers that used to hold the cables that suspended the instrument platform over the dish, now with nothing but empty space between them.

Milestone reached! We've finally determined the intensity of the Wow! Signal—one of its long-standing mysteries. Previous estimates were 54 Jy or 212 Jy. This new finding is just one of the key insights we’ll present in our upcoming paper, #AreciboWow II. #Astronomy #RadioAstronomy #SETI

Great book (PDF & EPUB) if you have any interest in the SKA's early history. Really good job from Richard Schilizzi, Ron Ekers, Peter Dewdney, and Phil Crosby on compiling a lot of evidence on the journey to establish the SKA, with what went well, and not so well, with lots of detail and notes.

Due to their precision, pulsars could act as navigational beacons for interstellar travel.
Because graduate student contributions to discoveries were not recognised at the time, Jocelyn's male PhD supervisor was awarded the Nobel Prize for discovering pulsars in 1974, considered one of the most important astronomical discoveries of the 20th century. (2/2)

Whilst I'm glad to see this is only a 2-week demo, and there was consultation with radio astronomers in a webinar, I can't really tell if this was discussed with radio astro folks at a global level, instead of just US astronomers?
Did anyone I know attend this webinar?
The demo will enable a 4G/LTE system wireless connection between a rover and a lander, establishing radio broadcasting across 1700-1800 MHz on the Lunar surface for a period of two weeks.
Will be an interesting case (from a technology, legal, and international obligation perspective), as radio spectrum allocation is distributed by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), which as far as I know, remits ends with terrestrial services. Keyword: terrestrial.

This goes well beyond what was expected from ALMA: for the first time, astronomers have been able to observe a disc around a young star in the Large Magellanic Cloud, a neighboring galaxy. It’s the first time such a disc has ever been found outside our galaxy, and is identical to those forming planets in our Milky Way.
